Fender Jazzmaster Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1965), made in Fullerton, California, serial # L78162, Candy Apple Red lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.
This well-worn but super cool "Genuine relic" Custom Color Jazzmaster dates to the early-CBS period at Fender. It shows a decent amount of honest play wear and some minor alteration but remains a great sounding and substantially original instrument. The guitar is finished in Candy Apple Red lacquer on the body with a matching headstock face. This was one of the most popular custom color options Fender offered as an extra-cost alternative to the standard Sunburst, a classic 1960's Fender look. The Jazzmaster was a popular instrument at this time, having been introduced in late 1958; still even the more common Custom Colors are far rarer than Sunburst examples.
The neck is stamped June 1965, just six months after the Fender company had been sold to the CBS corporation. The appointments show a mix of features specific to this period. The unbound thin veneer rosewood fingerboard has pearl dots as adopted in late 1964; binding would be added by the fall of '65. The white 3-layer plastic (instead of greenish nitrocellulose) laminated pickguard was also a new feature specific to solid color instruments. The neckplate still shows a late pre-CBS style "L" serial number. The two Jazzmaster wide-coil pickups are fitted with white plastic covers and the guitar mounts Fender floating tremolo/bridge system first used on this model. Another period feature is the white "amp" style knobs.
The grey-bobbin pickup coils are hand-dated on the bottom to 1965; the neck pickup is fully original while the bridge pickup has been rewound and releaded. Other than this and a larger-wire refret everything on the guitar is original. Showing quite a bit of play wear it rates as a "Real Relic" Jazzmaster with a super vibe. Pretty much the ultimate hot rod Surf'n'Twang machine, and a very versatile sounding and always super sharp looking guitar.
Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/2 in. (38 mm.).
This Jazzmaster shows a lot of use with moderately heavy playwear to the finish but remains in largely original condition. The all-original Candy Apple Red lacquer finish has significant arm wear to the top, exposing the gold metallic undercoat. The back of the body also shows significant belt buckle wear fully down into the wood. The body edges have some dings, chips and a couple of deeper worn areas into the wood on the bottom edge.
In an odd if subtle modification the outer edge of the headstock face has been beveled down slightly, for reasons unknown; possibly it was heavily chipped up and that bothered a previous owner. The red headstock finish remains substantially original besides this, with significant checking and flaking to the undercoat and a second string tree added to the face. The decal is surprisingly well preserved, the Fender logo has darkened as many '65's are but is not chipping or flaking.
The neck has been refretted with larger wire than the original spec, and the fingerboard shows some old divoting in the lower positions. The finish on the back of the neck is fairly heavily worn down to the wood on the lower half. All hardware on the instrument appears original; as noted the bridge pickup was re-wound and re-leaded (it sounds great) while the rest of the internal wiring appears original. The trem arm is original, the snap-on bridge cover is not present.
This guitar remains a fine sounding and playing Jazzmaster, especially if the player prefers a larger more modern fret wire. Even if not the cleanest example, this Candy Apple hot rod has a worn-in, well-played look many find appealing, the "real deal" in this age of artificial relics. The original case is present in worn but fully functional condition, with much of the leather ends worn away. Overall Very Good + Condition.
