Supro Model Tube Amplifier, made by Valco (1951), made in Chicago, serial # X-1516, tweed fabric covering finish.
The amplifiers built by Valco in Chicago from the 1930's through the '60s have maintained a reputation for great sound and solid design; often more so than the company's guitars over the decades since they were built. This little amp was Supro's first post-WWII offering and one of the their simplest designs, sold under the imaginative name "Supro Amplifier" and also offered as a set with the earliest postwar plastic-covered steels.
This mid-tier combo sports a snazzy look and solid construction with a woven Tweed-style fabric covering, with a rounded-corner square speaker cutout and a dark brown plush grille cloth. The black metal control panel bears white striped accents and some cool Valco-style graphics in the center. The amp features a simple layout of three instrument inputs and single volume and tone controls, putting this amp in a category similar to the Fender Harvard/Deluxe models of the mid-50s. A push-pull 6V6 power section puts out about 10-12 watts of power into a 10" field coil speaker.
Valco was a period leader in electric instruments when Leo Fender was still building amplifiers in a metal shack, and this is a typically attractive well-engineered amp with a good raunchy tone when turned up.
Height is 15 in. (38.1 cm.), 14 1/2 in. (36.8 cm.) width, and 7 1/2 in. (19 cm.) deep.
The amp is in overall very nice condition, with some small rips and scuffing to the covering and average light wear overall. The handle long ago met its end and has been replaced with a high quality leather handle from Bob Brookwood of Brookwood Leather. The grille cloth is well intact and the control panel is clean with only minor wear.
Electrically the amp is nicely original, including the 10" Rola field coil speaker, bearing the marking 285-027, dating it to the 27th week of 1950. The speaker has been professionally reconed and sounds wonderful. Both transformers are original to the amp and the power transformer bears the marking 166-030, dating it to the 30th week of 1950. Pots date to 29th week of 1950 as well. The amp has received our typical servicing and maintenance, including replacement of all electrolytic capacitors, a grounded 3-prong power cord, all sockets, pots and jacks cleaned and biased to spec.
A neat and still useful gigging amp for harp or guitar and quiet enough for recording purposes. Very Good + Condition.
