Gibson LG-3 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1959), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # S1757-17 (FON), natural lacquer finish, mahogany sides, back and neck, spruce top, rosewood fingerboard, original brown alligator chipboard case.
This is a beautifully preserved and fine sounding 1959 example of Gibson's premier period small body flat-top guitar, the LG-3. This model is basically the same instrument as the LG-2 with what Gibson claimed to be a "finer selection" of woods and a natural finish instead of sunburst. Gibson always upcharged for the natural finish option, even on this fairly inexpensive model it was sold at a bit of a premium. As a result the LG-3 is rather less common than its sunburst siblings, selling all of 423 units in 1959 which was not a huge total for the era.
This guitar's Factory Order Number dates it to early 1959, which many consider to be one of Gibson's classic years. It is a neat if fairly austere instrument with a tortoise pattern celluloid pickguard, small rectangular rosewood bridge, triple-bound top and single-bound back. The natural top has a nicely ambered patina after 60+ years. It has a slim, comfortable round-profile neck, topped with a headstock bearing Kluson Deluxe tuners and a block script Gibson logo. This is a fine-sounding late 1950s Gibson with the classic warm Kalamazoo sound in extremely fine condition, looking not much the worse for wear after 60+ years.
Overall length is 40 in. (101.6 cm.), 14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/2 in. (11.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.).
This LG does not show a lot of wear or repairs, appearing well cared for since 1960. The instrument does not appear to have been played a lot; there is only very minor pickwear to the lower sound hole rim. The finish shows some typical checking with small dings and handling marks overall, but no major wear. This guitar remains original with no noticeable repair except for a patched jack hole in the lower side, the residue of a (probably DeArmond) pickup used at some point.
The original thin maple bridgeplate is intact and unaltered; the retaining screws and nuts under the bridge have not been removed. The bridge itself may have been lowered just slightly at some point, but actually looks pretty undisturbed. Even the saddle appears original if possible reshaped a bit. This guitar has never had a neckset; the original frets and the fingerboard have some light wear in the lower positions, but playability is not affected. This LG would make an excellent gigging, songwriting or recording guitar, easy playing and handling with both sweetness and clarity to the sound in equal measure. It still rests in the original alligator-grain chipboard case. Excellent Condition.
