C. F. Martin 000-28 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1971), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 274886, natural lacquer finish, rosewood back and sides, spruce top, mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original molded black plastic hard shell case.
This guitar was made in very early 1971, one of only 232 000-28's shipped that year. This is a tiny figure compared to nearly 5500 D-28's leaving Nazareth that year. At this point the rosewood 000 was practically an endangered species at Martin due to the overwhelming demand for dreadnoughts! This one remains clean overall with some light wear and an added strap button at the heel.
Internally there is one alteration; at some point over the last 50 years someone quite artfully scalloped the rear legs of the main X-brace and the two tone bars. while sometimes we see this done poorly this instrument was skillfully re-worked and the sound of the guitar has definitely benefited from it. The result is a very nice player with a big, warm sound, really a much better guitar than many '70s Martins. It comes with a lovely letter signed by Frank Henry Martin congratulating the new owner on registering the warranty dated March 31, 1971, a neat piece of Martin history by itself.
Overall length is 39 7/8 in. (101.3 cm.), 15 in. (38.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/16 in. (10.3 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).
The Martin is a fine player with a recent neck reset, and a period-accurate refret with a new bone nut. The original bridge has been slightly lowered and a new, wider saddle has recently been added. The bridge pin holes have also been widened a bit near the saddle. The sides have a few fine splits in the grain that show no signs of growth, and only a handful of light knicks and scratches over the body and headstock. Internally, as noted the original braces were previously scalloped; the original rosewood bridgeplate remains untouched.
The black acetate pickguard has been replaced; the originals have usually shrunken badly by now. There is a repaired spruce grain crack at the front edge of the upper bass bout but no other visible repair work. The finish shows some light checking, mostly on the top, but overall very little play wear. A strap button was installed on the heel some time ago; it can be easily removed if desired. The original Grover Rotomatic tuners are fully functional. This fine-sounding 000-28 is housed in the original molded plastic hardshell case. Overall Excellent Condition.
