Fender Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1966), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 132653, Daphne Blue lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original grey hard shell case.

While we love the clean vintage guitars that have escaped really heavy use, we also have a thing for those that were obviously someone's' main gigging guitar long ago. This is a superbly well-worn "Genuine relic" 1966 Fender Mustang, with a lot of wear but tons of character!

This example was made less than two years after the model's debut in the second half of 1964, and just over a year after CBS bought the Fender company. It shows no changes from the debut models except the pearloid dots on the fingerboard in place of the earlier "clay" versions. The Mustang was Fender's classiest student guitar, basically the same as the Duo-Sonic II with the addition of the new "Dynamic vibrato" tailpiece and floating bridge. The model was instantly successful and has proved a timeless favorite of countless garage bands and even many pro players from the 1960s and '70s until today.

The body on this example sports a light blue lacquer finish with a decent amount of honest play wear. The pickguard is laminated plastic with a snazzy pearloid top layer. The neck is stamped FEB 1966, the pots coded to the 11th week of that year. The Fender Mustang was the most popular electric guitar in the world in 1966, with nearly 18,000 sold that year alone, far more than any other competitive instrument. This is a well-played but unaltered example, with a funky-but-chic vibe. Like its contemporary automotive namesake the early Mustang remains an American classic and still represents a great deal in an original 1960s Fender guitar!

Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This guitar is very well-played, a "real relic" but still all original except for a recent trem arm. The finish has general wear and tear everywhere, a few spots worn to the wood around the edges and dings, scrapes and dents overall. The blue body color has been "smoked" and greened quite a bit; we actually think it looks fabulous! The back of the neck is heavily worn down to the wood with that classic "played-in Fender" feel. There is finish checking on the headstock and the decal has some loss.

The guitar remains unaltered with no repairs or modifications and complete except for the new trem arm; the snap-on bridge cover is unsurprisingly long gone. All pickups and wiring are original; the tone cap appears to have been resoldered long ago. Everything works as intended; there is some corrosion to the metal (especially the bridge saddles) and the backplate. It looks like the trem plate was a bit overzealously cleaned in spots long ago. There is some fret and fingerboard wear in the lower positions but this played-in Mustang is still a very good player's instrument. It resides in the original case which is also quite worn with some ancient moisture damage at the bottom but still functional. Very Good + Condition.
