The headstock is a lovely 19th century banjo-style seen only on the first instruments of this type, but the real charm of this one lies in the artwork. The head is covered with finely executed colored-ink drawings depicting an early flapper-style bathing beauty, a bobbed-hair girl's portrait and a Little-Nemo-derived redhead with a fur-trimmed skirt. The neck and rim are maple construction with very high-grade hardware, including a heavy plated brass hoop and the rim is metal capped on both sides. The laminated flame maple neck has an ebony fingerboard with fairly elaborate shaped pearl inlay and the headstock is inlaid with a pearl \"Bacon\" script logo. This UB-2 has the early-style brown mahogany finish with plain inlay; later models were upgraded to a sunburst finishes with more binding and diamond fingerboard inlay. The UB-4 was introduced in 1926 and features fancy shaped pearl inlay in the bound rosewood fingerboard while the headstock has a pearl inlaid \"The Gibson\" logo. The bound-back resonator is fitted to a diamond pattern flange; all hardware is nickel plated. The Grover friction tuners are fitted with ivoroid buttons. Most Gibson banjo-ukes have no serial number-this actually has a standard Gibson FON stamped into the rim and chalked in the resonator, as was the practice at the time. In 1927 the model UB-5 was identical to this style 4 except for gold-plated hardware, and examples of both models were built in this batch.
