This is a nicely original and quite early example, with the first form of enclosed Kluson Deluxe tuners and the earliest "un-numbered" clear postwar barrel knobs. By the look of the hardware, this was added when the guitar was new-possibly at the factory but more likely by a Gibson dealer-the pickguard cut is not perfectly clean. All parts are period correct including the wiring and tall, numbered knobs; the pickup is mounted a bit farther back than on the typical ETG-150 resulting in a brighter sound, also enhanced by the spruce top. Weaver was a multitalented if sadly overlooked figure in American comedy; a pivotal figure in Spike Jones' City Slickers, writer for MAD magazine, film actor and more. The KeyKord series out of Chicago were a specialty contract for Stromberg-Voisinet, who later became Kay. They came with unfretted necks fitted with elaborate chord-fingering machinery mounted in a metal box above the fingerboard. The idea was instead of actually fingering chords, the player pressed a little illustrated tab with the chord symbol on it, strummed and voila!-the instrument played the chord for you!

This instrument was called a tenor guitar but is tuned to baritone uke tuning, and the chord symbols match those from the popular ukulele sheet music of the day although in practice it is playing in a different key! While this general idea would be revived more than once (as by Maccaferri in the 1950's) the keyKord was the most elaborate and ambitious exercise of the idea. Despite the ingenuity involved, these remain more of an amusing novelty than fully functional instrument...after all the "Guitar Hero" style video games are really the modern equivalent! This tenor guitar was a fairly elaborate creation with a full 21 chord tabs, a pearloid headstock with "KeyKord" incised and tabbed Grover tuners. Some average light wear overall, there are a few small crack repairs to the top and back but nothing serious. The chord mechanism works about as well as these ever did-it "plays" with the occasional squeak or buzz, but you can make the correct chord sounds with the appropriate keys. The Kalamazoo "Senior" was a designation used only in 1933-4; other than that stenciled on the headstock this is a standard KTG tenor guitar, basically the Model KG-11 with a 4-string neck. The tenor versions were not built in nearly as great numbers as the 6-string Kalamazoos, and don't turn up often today. This is a very lightly built, ladder braced guitar with a snappy tone with plenty of volume.

This is a also well-traveled instrument, with a WWII provenance written right on the original case! It belonged to a fellow named Howard T. Schaeffer, who was a T-5 Corporal in the Army Air Corps. The case lid is marked in red paint "Bunky Schaeffer, ETO 43-44-? Towson MD" -at least we think it's "Bunky"; it's hard to be sure because it's partially covered by taped-on mailing labels which detail the next part of the story. According to a hand-written card taped inside, Cpl. Schaeffer had to leave his guitar behind when his unit-the 850th Air Engineering Squadron-moved on. The cards detail a shipment back to his father in the US, along with some other possessions. While this guitar played only the tiniest part in the grand story, it's cool-and kind of humbling-to think of the history this little tenor has survived through.

Overall length is 36 in. Considering it's interesting history this guitar remains in surprisingly good condition, with some average finish wear but no cracks or other structural issues. There are no alterations except the bridge has been lowered slightly, and of course the added stickers when new! The most noticeable wear is a well-strummed over area on the top just below the fingerboard. The frets show some wear in the first position, above that they look nearly unplayed. You won't find mention of a tenor J-35 in any reference, but here again is proof that if you went to your Gibson dealer with a dollar and a dream (or in this case $37.50 and a dream), the Gibson company would oblige. Gibson sometimes offered (in small print in the catalog) a tenor option on guitars, but this is more usually seen on archtop instruments, and as far as we know no other 4-string J-35 has ever surfaced.

The small body L-00 was carried in stock as the TG-00 in tenor format, but the larger Jumbo body would initially seem an unlikely candidate for such treatment. The neck is very slim with a thin "French" heel, an unbound dot inlaid fingerboard with a pointed end, white script Gibson logo, and individual Kluson openback tuners with plastic buttons. This 1964 TG-25 was shipped out in 1964 just as the last strains of the "folk era" were drowned out by the arrival of the Beatles, and likely was put away almost immediately instead of becoming part of some serendipity singing group. The cherry sunburst finish is still eye-poppingly bright, with only tiny handling marks. There are no cracks, no damage; no signs of much use in 50+ years.

This is also a relatively rare guitar -- 1964 was the peak production year, and all of 75 were sold. Not many can have survived this well, even if they weren't played much. The adjustable saddle is way up, the neck angle is great, and this one sounds as good as these get. The top in particular shows a lot of wear from energetic strumming, including a spot just behind/under the pickguard well into the wood. There are also wear spots through the finish all around the sound hole rim and on either side of the tip of the fingerboard. The back of the neck is worn down to the wood from the first fret most of the way up its length. The frets are in very good shape, with what looks like an old but correct-style refret.

The lacquered bridge is intact and does not appear to have ever been off and reglued, which is a minor miracle on one of these -- even the pins are original. The guitar plays very well with an unusually deep, rich tone for a tenor, and has plenty of volume. Not the cleanest, but one of the best-sounding Gibson 4-string guitars we have had in a while. The original chipboard case is included, festooned with period graffiti from "The Rambling Trio of Lincoln Ill." and "Guitar Kid 871 P.I.B.". While we have seen a number of guitars by other makers fitted out with D'Angelico necks, this is the most eccentric "collaboration" we are aware of! Whether this Wilkanowski guitar was originally a tenor, converted to that format from a six-string or even finished off from an uncompleted body by John D'Angelico is unknown, but an engaging mystery.

The body is in the standard Wilkanowski pattern, with cello-like points where the upper bout slopes down towards the waist. The soundholes are the type used on later Wilkanowski instruments: a swooping "cat's-eye" design almost identical to the contemporary Gretsch Synchromatic style, but curving inward rather than outward.

The neck is a standard D'Angelico Style "A" tenor pattern, with a 23" scale and four individual Grover "Sta-Tite" tuners. The celluloid bound ebony fingerboard and headstock have pearl block inlay but there is no logo. The nickel-plated tailpiece is the standard 1940's D'Angelico style, drilled for only 4 strings and with no engraved logo; the bridge is D'Angelico's work as well.

This is one of the biggest and most powerful-sounding tenor guitars we have ever encountered, and a perfect playing instrument.

Overall length is 40 1/4 in. This Vivi-Tone tenor guitar is essentially a 4-string version of the lute-shaped mandolas and mandocellos Lloyd Loar designed for his company, which themselves were produced in extremely small numbers. This is a full-body (not plank solid body) teardrop shaped instrument with binding top and back, painted on F-holes (25+ years before Gretsch!) and the singular Vivi-Tone pickup mounted in a drawer slid in from the bass side of the body. The other features are typically Vivi-Tone; the cast tailpiece (which can hold 8 strings), the heavy tortiose celluloid pickguard solidly mounted to the top and ivoroid facing to the front and back of the headstock, with a silkscreened company logo. The headstock also carries 4 Grover tabbed banjo tuners. This is the only extant example of this exact style Vivi-Tone we are aware of, and one of the most unique pieces from a company that specialized in the singular!

Overall length is 35 1/2 in. All original except for the hardwired cord (which was badly deteriorated) replaced with proper period cloth-covered wire, with the original plug. Some heavy checking and moisture wear to the finish overall; some finish loss from flaking around the neck heel and bottom side. Not much actual play wear; this instrument appears to have been little used but stored for some time in a damp environment. Pickup is fully functional and despite its unusual construction the instrument actually plays quite well.
