Like all original Sho-Bud products the guitar is beautifully made and very neatly designed. The company was originally the brainchild of top steelers Shot Jackson and Buddy Emmons and in many ways was a continuation of the Bigsby tradition, Paul Bigsby having phased out steel production before selling his operation in 1965. The Maverick shows a definite Bigsby inspiration, in both its operating system and maple/aluminum construction.

This instrument has ten strings, three pedals and three knee levers. The maple body has a separate maple neck unit capped with an aluminium headstock and a fingerboard with the traditional Sho-Bud gambler's (heart,spade, clover and diamond) motif. The Maverick was standard with three pedals and one lever; this example is a much more versatile set up with a 3X3 configuration, set up "Jimmy Day" style. It is also cosmetically slightly fancier than most with a maple inset in the pedal footer and pinstripe trim on the body. This is a very good-sounding and an excellent performance instrument for thebeginning to intermediate peda; steel player offering much of the appeal of the scarcer higher-priced vintage Sho-Bud professional models.

Overall length is 33 3/4 in. The hollow cast aluminum body is fitted with Gibson's earliest bar magnet pickup - later nicknamed the "Charlie Christian" pickup. This seminal pickup - the first designed by Walter Fuller in mid-'35 - has an unbound black plastic coil form with a single metal blade polepiece for the three bass strings and segmented blades for the treble strings.

The very advanced (for 1935) circuitry features both volume and tone controls with a fancy Bakelite knob on either side of the lower bout-a feature requested by Gibson's consultant Alvino Rey. The body's shoulders are more rounded and angle into neck at a sharper angle compared to the subsequent wooden-body EH-150. The unbound rosewood fingerboard has a V-shaped end, white flush fret inlays and mother-of-pearl dot markers. This is an unusual appointment on this instrument as most were fitted with ebony fingerboards. This instrument has the second style of bridge, with slots to hold the strings but only two securing screws. The body, neck and headstock on the E-150 are finished in raw aluminum, no doubt influenced by the Rickenbacker Electro instruments of the previous year. The original open back Grover tuners are stamped with the company logo and are nickel- plated.

This model was originally designated both the "EHG" (Electric Hawaiian Guitar) and "E-150" (reflecting the original $150.00 list price of the guitar-amp set). Gibson's records indicate that somewhere around 100 of this model were shipped from Kalamazoo from October 1935 into the beginning of 1936. The production run was very limited; Gibson quickly deduced that the metal body (which had to be outsourced) was not an advantage and switched to a wooden body built in-house.

The serial numbers on this model-apparently beginning at 100 and running up to just over 200-are a specific series impressed into the metal, and records indicate that the same instrument was sometimes shipped out to several different dealers before eventually finding a home! By any standard this is one of the rarest models in Gibson history. Not only were a very limited number originally produced, but more than a few were likely sacrificed to the WWII aluminum drives enforced from around 1942! In terms of not only Gibson history but the story of the 20th century guitar in general the E-150 is a milestone design, and marks the progress of the electric guitar from novelty to ubiquity. This example is nicely original, still plays and sounds great and comes with the original fitted tweed case.

Overall length is 31 3/4 in. (80.6 cm.), 8 7/8 in. Twin neck instruments like this allowed players to rapidly shift between tunings, even in mid-song, before the perfection of pitch changing devices. These expensive oddities were primarily the province of advanced professional players, and many were one-off creations. This one combines a 7-string and 8-string EH-150 into a single relatively portable package, looking rather like maple-bodied Siamese twins. While this configuration was the most popular for Gibson and was eventually cataloged as a regular model, this example is doubly unusual as each guitar has its own tone and volume controls; other similar twins are generally equipped only with a single set of controls. It also moints Gibson's optional bridge covers on both sides. The instrument appears identical to one pictured with Guy Principato in Gibson catalog AA (1940) and may well have belonged originally to this performer as it was discovered in his old Boston-area stomping grounds. Well played but all original and unaltered; there is a decent amount of finish wear to the back and sides, mostly from rubbing against the stand and case over the years. There is some finger wear from picks on the face near the fingerboard of the 7-string, but not heavy. Checking, small dings and chips all around but overall still very nice looking. There is one crack back to the rim off one of the 7-string bridge screws. As is common with many of these early 150's, the screwed-on back has shrunk a bit off the hollow rim, leaving a small gap at the back edge. The wood body is built of a solid center block with outlying wings (like later Rickenbacker guitars) with striking checkerboard binding on all edges. The metal bridge unit holds the pickup and controls, with a knob on each side and a fairly heavy stamped metal cover. The pickup itself is very similar in design to a Gibson P-90, if somewhat brighter sounding. The headstock is faced in tortoise celluloid with an "Tonemaster" stencil in a music note motif. There is a repaired seam where the bass side body section is mounted to the neck/body centerpiece, this is more noticeable on the back. There is also a spot of curly-cord burn on the upper back. There are a couple of rust spots on the bridge/pickup assembly through the chrome plating-most of the plating itself is still quite shiny but it has flaked a bit in these two areas. The Kluson tuners are original with a bit of corrosion and new buttons. The jackplate is polished aluminum and may not be original although it appears period. The B-7 seven-string version was built in much smaller numbers than the standard B-6 - in 1937-8 the extra string option cost you an additional $10! This is a fairly early example with typical features for 1936-7. With the famous 1 1/2" horseshoe magnet pickup found only on prewar guitars and strings loading through the body this B-7 has a combination of features considered to produce the ultimate Rickenbacker tonethese instruments are generally considered the finest sounding lap steel guitar ever made.

The body is molded black Bakelite with hollow cavities covered by silver metal plates, the screwed-on neck has integral molded frets and nut with inset white position dots. This guitar was originally fitted with the second style of tuners used with seven-sided cast metal buttons, individual units on the bass side and a mandolin-type bank of four on the treble. The pickup is adjustable for height with knurled knobs, and the pickup mounting flange is marked "PAT PEND", which dates it to mid-1937 or earlier. The volume pot is on the treble side and the tone on the bass-a short lived arrangement. In common with the earlier models the output jack is still mounted on the bass side. This is a great sounding steel and a good player's example of the most sought-after guitar of its type.

Overall length is 29 3/4 in. (75.6 cm.), 9 1/4 in. This is a very well-played and worn in steel, but still sounds great. There is no major damage to the Bakelite-just scuffing and a few small chips. The metal parts show a decent amount of plating is worn off the body cover plates on the treble side. The pickup appears to have been rewound long ago, but still sounds fantastic with the combination of shimer and meaty mids these are celebrated for. Most of the wiring rig and the pots are original but the old Bakelite radio knobs and tone cap are not. The bass side tuners are 1950's Waverly units, the treble side strip is the original Mandolin-style piece with shaped metal buttons. The pickup is the same blade-equipped unit with an internal horseshoe magnet used on all first National and Dobro electrics. It is mostly hidden, inserted from the back into an abstract shaped metal housing molded into the body. Some general wear overall; appears original except the tuners are modern correct style repros and there is an added enlarged metal jackplate to the side. These instruments were the standard of their day and are still generally considered the finest sounding lap steel ever made. The B-6 features the famous 1 1/2" horseshoe magnet pickup found only on pre-war guitars and strings loading thru the body; the combination of features considered to produce the finest sound. The body is molded black Bakelite with hollow cavities covered by off-white enameled metal plates, the screwed-on neck has integral molded frets and nut with inset white position dots. This guitar has the later style of tuners used, individual Grover units with cloverleaf bases and plastic buttons.

The pickup is adjustable for height with knurled knobs. The volume and tone controls are both on the treble side and equipped with the original mixed white-and-black plastic knobs used up into the 1950's. Unlike earlier models the output jack is now mounted on the treble side of the body. The body marked below the bridge with a 1932 patent number, pickup mounting flange is marked with another patent number which dates it to 1937. This is a predictably great sounding steel, the final version of the pre-war style and an extremely nice example of the most sought-after player's instrument of its type.

Overall length is 29 3/4 in. (75.6 cm.), 9 1/2 in. (24.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 22 9/16 in. (573 mm.). Width of nut is 2 1/4 in. (57 mm.). Quite clean overall-some light wear and scuffing, but no major wear or repair. Some yellowing and discoloration to the enamel on the plates, but it is mostly intact. One tuner post (the sixth string) is noticeably bent and the tuner buttons have shrunk somewhat, but all the original tuners are still functional. The voume pot was replaced long ago (possibly when new) by one with a "click-off" feature, odd for a guitar but perfectly functional. The instrument is otherwise all original. This one still has period-possibly original ground-wound strings on it but retains the typical great sound. Includes the original HSC in decent condition.

Overall Excellent - Condition.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0672/8702/3756/files/01_36a74938-5997-4421-aef7-7f11a032e5ce.jpg?v=1774330764
fender-champion-lap-steel-electric-guitar-1954-6752
Fender Champion Lap Steel Electric Guitar (1954)
Fender Champion Model Lap Steel Electric Guitar (1954), made in Fullerton, California, yellow pearloid finish, hardwood body.

A good player's example of Fender's "bread and butter" lap steel guitar from the first half of the 1950's. Although designed as a student instrument, the Champion Steel is a great-sounding guitar well suited to professional use then or now, with a Broadcaster style flat pole pickup fully equivalent in sound to the legendary 1950's "Blackguard" Teles. The flashy plastic-covered symmetrical two-bout body has a chrome bridge and cover plates with dome-top knurled knobs. The serial number "7066" is stamped on the bridgeplate where the strings anchor through the body. The metal fingerboard plate pinned to the body has black paint screening to outline fret positions.

The headstock has metal facing with integral nut and Kluson Deluxe strip tuners. The peghead is stamped with lighting bolt logo and "Fender Electric Instrument Co. Fullerton, California". All screws are Phillips-head, typical of 1954 Fender productionthe pots but undated. A year or so later the Champ design was altered to a less well regarded design with a smaller plastic-covered pickup that is cleaner and much tamer sounding. Nice examples of the original style Champ are increasingly harder to find; many have been sacrificed over the years to provide electric components for Telecaster recreations. This is a very cool steel guitar for playing or collecting, a nice 60 year old Fender instrument at a reasonable price!.

Overall length is 29 3/4 in. (75.6 cm.), 7 1/2 in. (19 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/8 in. (3.5 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 22 1/2 in. (572 mm.). Width of nut is 2 1/4 in. (57 mm.). A nice example with some small very dings and pits to the metal fingerboard; there are small position numbers scratched on the treble side of the fingerboard-you have to look closely to really notice. Otherwise the guitar is quite clean overall with only minor play wear, some scuffing to the chrome and a few edge dings into the covering. All original except for replaced tuners-now older Kluson strips but with metal buttons and without the safe-ti-slot string posts. The electronics are completely and unmolested including the (great sounding) original pickup and wiring..a real screamer when cranked.
