These instruments were built in London and available in the US labeled Ampeg (1963-4) and Baldwin (which bought the company in September 1965). This is an early Baldwin-marked example, identical to Burns-labeled instruments but with the new "Baldwin" logo on the pickguard. A handwritten tag inside dates the electronics inspection to 24 December 1965. This guitar features the earlier pattern single sided headstock and sunburst-finished neck, changed by Baldwin to a natural finish double-sided design by summer '66. The red-black sunburst finish overall is standard for this model, and this example is still vibrantly colored without the heavy fading and checking often seen on these English-made guitars.

The Jazz Split Sound was Burns' midline instrument; professional class but less expensive than the more dramatically styled Black Bison and Hank Marvin guitars at the top of the line. Obviously somewhat inspired by the Stratocaster, the JSS has three "Split Sound" Tri-sonic pickups with a rotary control giving four tone selections including the snarlingly out-of-phase "Wild Dog" and the patented "Split Sound" which combines different half-coils to accentuate bass and treble registers. The lavish Burns "Series II" vibrato system incorporates a floating bridge unit with fully adjustable individual saddles and must rate as one of the best systems of its kind. The medium-scale neck is slim and comfortable with a slightly less round feel than a Fender. This rates as a fine-playing guitar with tons of character and a very distinctive sound, and an extremely good value in a professional caliber 1960's vintage guitar.

Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 13 1/4 in. (33.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 23 1/2 in. (597 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.). Refretted, new nut, some parts changes but overall a nice example. Finish very good with none of the heavy checking common to these instruments and very little fade. Tuners replaced with pearloid-button Schallers, strap buttons are modern but similar to the originals, 3 bridge saddle screws are replaced. All other hardware and electronics original-includes the oft-missing vibrato arm and cover plate. Comes in a very nice original Baldwin hard case. This line was launched in summer 1965; they are sleek little twangers, Fender inspired, dubbed the "Incomparable Magnatone Starstream Slimline (of) personalized electric guitars" This X-15 Tornado combines some original ideas with Fender-like elements; the body is rather "Stratty" while the bridge, vibrato and electronics are more in the Jazzmaster/Jaguar mold. It's fairly certain that Paul Barth was involved in the Starstream design-the instruments share a "family resemblance" to guitars he marketed under the "Bartell" name. Whatever their pedigree, these are well made, light, handy good sounding guitars.

The body is smoothly contoured, with a deeper center blending into a tapered edge. The neck is maple with a rosewood fingerboard; The quality of work is to a higher standard than many 1965 guitars. "American made, by American craftsmen" was a selling point. The single-sided headstock is fitted with strip Kluson Deluxe tuners with safe-T-slot posts. One nifty innovation is a screwed-down metal nutpiece fitted over the strings forcing them down over the zero fret, an interesting idea that works well. The guitar also features a very functional tilt neck adjustment, similar to what Fender used later. Magnatone helpfully put a sticker on the neckplate pointing this out!

The floating bridge has blade on the bottom that rocks in a "V" shaped piece of metal sunk into the bodyand individual saddles adjustable for intonation. The trem design is indebted to Fender's Jazzmaster; Magnatone reversed the action of the spring and replaced the locking button with a flange. This "Lever Lock" facility was heavily touted, but functionally nothing Fender hadn't offered. The single coil pickups are similar in size to Rickenbackers, with a metal outer casing and white plastic center. These great sounding units are unique to the Magnatone Starstream, but similar to Bartell pickups produced by Barth in California. The electronics rig is wired to a top-mounted laminated plastic pickguard with the "Magnatone" logo cut through to the contrasting lower level, a nice cosmetic touch. Although the control layout appears straightforward it is oddly complicated. The two volumes are not for individual pickups, but each controls a separate circuit selected by the upper bout switch. The lower switches are not simple on/off selectors, but include tone-modifying resistors and combine the pickups in sometimes unxepected ways! The range of sounds is impressive, from some very funky combinations to a remarkably deep resonant purr for such a "surfy" instrument. One of our 1960's favorites and a great value in a vintage American-made solidbody.

Overall length is 39 7/8 in. (101.3 cm.), 12 1/2 in. Very nice overall-100% original with the original molded HSC. The finish has checked in a serpentine way peculiar to these Magnatones but otherwise a very fine example. A few chips and dings but no serious wear, this guitar has not been played very much. Even includes (in the case) what are probably the original flatwound strings. This example has all the coolest features-it's a stoptail without a vibrato, which makes for more flexible playability and it carries the rarer Polaris white finish, the '60's descendant of the 50's limed mahogany "TV" livery. This one has typical '62 features: unbound thick rosewood fingerboard with clay dot inlay, blended 3-color sunburst, gold "transition" logo. Very nice overall except for a noticeable repair to the body (not the neck) in the neck heel area-solid, but visible. Fairly clean overall with a nice, unfaded finish. Set up with an old Badass intonatable bridge. The Kluson tuners are the correct integral strip style, but carry Safe-T-Slot string posts so are likely not original to this guitar. Missing the center inserts from the tone and volume knobs. Very good sound, a nice player's example of a fairly rare Epiphone Coronet variation. With its wide comfortable neck and three powerful Tri-Sonic pickups the Burns Double Six is a versatile and great-sounding guitar for many applications. It is also a supremely striking looking machine, with a vibrant green sunburst finish and a huge double-sided headstock. This 1966 example has the standard three single-coil Burns Tri-Sonic pickups giving the Double Six a clear and very powerful sound, and the big neck is a treat for players who feel constrained by the typical narrow Rickenbacker-style 12 string fingerboard.

This guitar was made six months or so after the US Baldwin company took over the London-based Burns operation in September 1965. This is the American export version with the Ampeg logo on the pickguard, available in the US between 1963-5. Ampeg was looking for an electric guitar line to complement their popular amplifiers and imported a limited line of re-branded Burns instruments, but the price in the US after transport and import duties were figured in proved to be a major stumbling block. The "Jazz Split Sound" was re-named the "Wild Dog EG-1S" by Ampeg, but the nameplate on the actual guitar remained unchanged. By the time the Burns company was purchased by Baldwin in late 1965 the agreement had lapsed. The only alteration is one small filled hole in the headstock face from an extra string tree, there is some light staining to the grain on the headstock back from ancient tuner oiling efforts. Pickguard is shrunken somewhat but still intact with no broken corners or major pull-up. All original finish and hardware; pickups still wired to the original pre-1967 spec. Appears to have been played mostly with the original "ashtray" cover on; the bridge and saddles are super clean with no rust but the cover (still intact) has some corrosion, matching the neck pickup cover. The Baby Bison is generally a straightforward design, the most advanced feature is the same simple-looking but deceptively elaborate two-pickup circuit shared with the Burns Virginian. The pickups look identical from the outside, but the neck pickup being a stacked double coil unit with the second coils blended in via a "presence" control knob.

This model was offered in both cherry and black and is one of the more familiar Baldwin guitars to US players, as the initial production run was mostly sent here as flag bearers for the Baldwin/Burns line. This is a trim and versatile guitar, once known as a favorite of Doobie Brother and studio ace Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. The pickups are quite powerful without losing clarity, and the sound ranges from crisp to raunchy easily. A very cool and underrated 1960's guitar!

Overall length is 38 1/2 in. (97.8 cm.), 14 1/2 in. (36.8 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.). Rather faded cherry finish on face; all original except newer Strat-style vibrato bar and the back trem cover is missing. Clean guitar, not much checking; one big ding on the back of the neck near the hearstock but overall not too much wear. There is an inexplicable screw hole through the back of the body into the vibrato cavity. A good player with the typically excellent sound, with the big rectangular Baldwin HSC. These instruments were built in London but were available in the US labeled Ampeg (1963-4) and Baldwin (after they bought the company in September 1965). This is a very early Baldwin example featuring the earlier pattern single sided headstock and sunburst-finished neck with an unbound fingerboard, typical of Burns examples. Baldwin added fingerboard binding almost immediately and then changed the neck to a natural finish double-sided design by the summer of '66. The red-black sunburst finish overall was standard for this model; this example exhibits fairly heavy fading on the face often seen on these English-made guitars. The electronics assembley inspection sticker carries a date of 7 January 1966 and all the instrument's features are identical to earlier Burn models except for the Baldwin s-logo'd pickguard.

The Jazz Split Sound was Burns' midline instrument; professional class but less expensive than the more dramatically styled Black Bison and Hank Marvin guitars at the top of the line. Obviously somewhat inspired by the Stratocaster, the JSS has three "Split Sound" Tri-sonic pickups with a rotary control giving four tone selections including the snarlingly out-of-phase "Wild Dog" and the patented "Split Sound" which combines different half-coils to accentuate bass and treble registers-this guitar is a particularly smarly example.

Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 13 1/16 in. (33.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 23 3/8 in. (594 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.). Overall a nice original example, some general wear but no damage or repairs. The face is clean but faded, the back has more color but a lot of scuffs into (but not through) the finish. The original fancy Trem arm is missing (as is so often the case) but the mounting screw is intact, along with the also oft-removed chrome tailpiece cover. No changed parts, apart from the trem arm the guitar is complete, a good player with a large period but not original Baldwin HSC. With a nice medium-flat C-profile neck, one very hot P-90 and a nickle stoptail with Maestro Vibrola this is a very lively tone package indeed. Equipped with a good neck angle, so the vibrato is actually useful on this one! 1962 was a great year for these guitars, they may have built a lot of this model but not many have survived this nicely.

Overall length is 40 in. (101.6 cm.), 13 1/4 in. (33.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/16 in. (3.3 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). Superb, clean and original-a great example of an early Les Paul/SG junior. The bolt holding the trem arm is replaced, all else original. Two corners of the pickguard have small shrinkage cracks, otherwise no damage, repair or alterations; bright unfaded cherry finish overall. A lovely guitar and a fine player with the expected powerful P-90 sound. Includes the original alligator-grain SSC in better than usual condition. This color option was rarely ordered in the 1960's (a brighter era, in some ways!) making the stark B & W aesthetics of this guitar both scarce and striking today. By 1969, the Jaguar was starting to fade from Fender's line, as older designs like the Stratocasters and Telecasters proved more useful for the high-volume music of the day. Jaguars from this era were produced in much smaller numbers than the earlier 1960's. Specific characteristics of this guitar are mostly similar to pre-CBS examples, the most visible difference being the bound, pearloid block inlaid fingerboard introduced in 1966. The pickguard is the white plastic phased in beginning spring 1965; all other hardware remained unchanged except for the Fender-fabricated tuners in place of the older Klusons. This is an excellent playing and sounding Jag, and the black-chrome-and-pearloid look is both badass hillbilly deluxe and surf noir nirvana.

Overall length is 40 in. (101.6 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.). Very clean overall; some light finish wear (Most notably a large case-rub area to the lower back edge of the body) and small dings but the original custom color finish as a whole is very well preserved. All hardware is original except the tuner mounting screws; the mute has been re-equipped with newer rubber foam and actually works quite well. There are signs of touch-up on the headstock face between the nut and the logo, likely the result of some sort of now-inexplicable extra string trees or locking nut attempt-not super obvious but visible under close examination. An excellent player and a uniquelycool looking 60's Fender! Includes a newer repro HSC.
