By the late '60's interest was already running high in the previous generation of 1950's instruments-by then the Precision bass had been heavily modified from its original form. CBS/Fender took notice of this, and the now-renamed "Telecaster" bass was the result. This 1968 bass is a fairly accurate re-creation of the original Precision of 1952; the maple neck, "slab" ash body, two-saddle bridge and string-wrapped single coil pickup are all accurate to the original. Small differences included the white pickguard (in place of the original black) and the newer style tuners with "egg" shaped buttons.

This particular bass carries a neckdate of May 68, with pots dated to 1966 like virtually all late '60's Fenders. It features a single-piece maple neck with the "skunk stripe" om the back where the trussrod is laid in-the very first Telecaster basses had a maple cap fingerboard, changed almost immediately to this style. The neck still carries the older style nitrocellulose finish, whild the body finish is the blonde, slightly heavier nitro introduced in '68. This is a very solid, great playing and powerful sounding bass with an upfront tone with plenty of muscle.

Overall length is 46 in. (116.8 cm.), 12 7/8 in. (32.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 34 in. (864 mm.). Width of nut is 1 13/16 in. (46 mm.). Beautiful rather clean and unfaded original blonde finish with some light checking, one spot of armwear on the top rim, some finger wear behind the pickup and several small burn marks inside the lower cutaway from an old-style curly cord left there too long. The pickards on these earliest Telecaster Basses were an unusual single-layer white nitrocellulose that has prover very unstable over time; few if any have survived intact. This bass has a perfect reproduction of this guard-the stains from the outgassing original can be seen around the lower end of the fingerboard. The frets, finish and all electronics are original (these early Tele bass pickups have often been replaced) and this is a very good sounding bass. Includes the original HSC in rather battered condition. Along with the equally striking teardrop-shaped Mark series, the Phantoms were born at JMI in Dartford, Kent in the early '60's but the majority of production examples were sourced from the Eko guitar factory in Recanti, Italy. The Phantom IV bass is one of Vox's most imposing instruments; unlike the short-scale very thin-necked layout of most Vox basses these are a full 34" scale with a big wide neck based on the Fender Precision. The two pickups provide a wide range of tonal options; there are not a lot of 1960's basses that provide this combination of practical playability and wicked cool looks! This is a very nice example, complete with the typical original Vox oblong hard case. Overall very nice condition; All original hardware and finish with less checking than commonly seen on these Italian Vox instruments. There are several patched areas of finish on the body edges (you have to look closely to see them) and one noticeable finish chip in the back of the neck, otherwise very clean looking bass. The pickguard has less shrinkage than most and no broken corners (a real rarity on an Italian Phantom!) and the logo is crisp and clear. There are two extra screws in the 'guard from where the fingerrest was moved at one point and an extra strap button added to the neck heel (for better balance); no other alterations. Nice solid neck, this is a better player than many of these and better preserved than most! Essentially the bass version of a 12-string guitar, the H-8 is strung in octaves with a higher string above each bass string. The sound is similar to a bass and guitar playing in unison, and can create a very rich tonal effect. The instrument's features are typically Hagstrom-a sculpted solid body with very slim neck, excellent sounding hi-fi pickups and a bank of slide switches for controlling them. Despite the imposing appearance it's very easy to play, with a standard 30 1/2" short scale fingerboard, very low action and Hagsrtom adjustable bridge. Perhaps the oddest feature visually is the mix of large and small Van Ghent tuners on the headstock. The H-8 was popular briefly in the late 60's, notable in retrospect for appearing on several Jimi Hendrix cuts played by both Noel Redding and Hendrix himself. The admittedly specialist instrument saw some success slipped out of production by the '70's and is fairly rare today. The sound is unique and in some ways underappreciated-in the late 70's Cheap Trick took the idea to further extremes with Tom Petersson's 12-string basses. The Hagstrom H-8 remains one of those under-utilized sonic gems, still waiting to be fully exploited and appreciated!

Overall length is 43 in. (109.2 cm.), 14 1/8 in. Plays and sounds excellent (what a sound!) but has some general wear and tear. There are some large dings and scratches to the finish in several different areas-overall not too bad but a bit odd as the finish patina is still bright and shiny with not a lot of use evident. There is a long repaired grain split on the back of the neck from the 3rd fret up to the headstock; this is common on older Hagstroms with this very thin neck and large proportion of metal in the "expander" truss rod system. This is very solid and cleanly sealed with no added finish, and only evident on close examination. The fingerboard binding has been replaced with grained ivoroid, also a clean job. All else appears original, this is a good player's example of this rare and interesting '60's bass creation. It carries a green stamp "5-04-041-B" which is generally thought to indicate April 1971, although the neck itself has a slightly older feel. The body is original black finish with the white pickguard, the pickup is dated to 1970 and the pots carry a 1966 date code typical of Fenders into the early 70's. The body is unusually light for this era and there is a "Special" stamp under the neck heel; this may have been an artist or convention sample instrument. The four-string brother to the top-of-the line "Hank Marvin signature" guitar this imposing three-pickup bass was designed expressly for the group it is named for, and used by them through the 1960's. It is also one of the best playing and sounding instruments of this eccentric but always interesting line. The Marvin guitar is the most collected of all Burns instruments, due to the Shadows enduring worldwide popularity- the Shadows bass is actually even rarer and is a must to complete the set!

Introduced in the middle of 1964, this was the company's most prestigious bass to date and the formerly top-of-the line Bison Bass was immediately re-styled to match it. The original Shadows bass was built in fairly small numbers and Burns-logo'd examples are very scarce today; the situation didn't change much after September 1965, when the American Baldwin piano and organ company took over Burns' operation. The model remained in limited production until the late '60's, but many features were changed in mid-1966 when Baldwin 'standardized' the line.

This early 1967 Baldwin example uses the "flattened" scroll headstock introduced in mid-1966; it was easier to produce than the heavy carved scroll used before that. The tuners are metal-button VanGents with a streamlined cover, replacing the earlier plastic-button version. The three "Bar-O-Matik" pickups bearing a "James O. Burns Design" inscription are mated to a simple Strat-like wiring rig of a 3-way switch, master volume and 2 tone knobs. One serious oddity is the patented adjustable "Rezo-Tube" bridge, used without a vibrato on bass models. This floats over the body and each string terminates in a separate tube inside a hollow cavity. The 33 1/2" scale neck with a bound rosewood fingerboard is shared only with the Bison Bass, other Burns basses had a shorter 30" scale. The body is a variation on the fender Precision previously favored by the Shadows, with curvier cutaway horns typical of Jim Burns' designs.

Jim Burns himself was extremely proud of the instruments he designed for the Shadows, who were still among the UK's top acts in 1964. These models put his company firmly on the map as England's premier guitar maker, and despite the obvious Fender inspiration they were unlike most guitars in existence in 1965 both in look and sound. The Shadows bass is very light for its size, handles very well and is an excellent and versatile player's instrument. Baldwin had limited success with the entire burns line but generally better luck with the less expensive models like the Vibraslim and Jazz Split Sound. This most dramatic looking bass is a considerable rarity, especially in this condition.

Overall length is 47 in. (119.4 cm.), 14 1/4 in. This bass is in truly spectacular condition; this is a time capsule example and there can't be many Baldwin/Burns instruments left that have weathered the years since the 1960's this well! The finish has only a couple of check lines (many of these have checked very heavily) and has virtually no wear, only a couple of tiny chips near the bridge. The heavy celluloid pickguards have shrunk only very slightly and there is a small area of wear just to the surface of the plastic near the neck pickup. All hardware is original and complete with the plating still shiny; not a screw has been changed and all the usually missing arcane Burns esoterica is fully intact including the "cage" handrest and mute bar (with still functional rubber foam). The original factory black nylon strings are still fitted; the frets have no wear and the bass plays perfectly. After MCA bought Nathan Daniels' guitar and amp operation in 1966, they decided expand into more upscale instruments than the traditional Masonite-and-pine Danelectro creations that had proven successful in the first place. The very extensive Coral line consisted of both hollowbody instruments (with bodies sourced from Japan) and solidbody basses and guitars with slim Fender-influenced contours made entirely in the Neptune, NJ factory. These newer instruments were only in production for less than two years before MCA folded the operation entirely, leaving thousands of parts unused-many of which still turn up today! Authentic, factory-assembled original Coral models are actually fairly scarce today-at least compared to the very popular and budget-oriented Danelectro line.

The Wasp bass is a short-scale 4 string (a 6-string bass was offered, but is even rarer) solidbody bass with a number of interesting features. The neck is the standard 24-fret Danelectro Longhorn blank fitted with a spliced on solid rosewood(!) single-sided headstock, with Kluson guitar-size tuners and a factory brass nut. The body is offset in the Fender Jaguar mode but more stylized, with a very thin tapered rim. The pickguard is a fantastic-looking silver swirl 3-D plastic perfect for reflecting psychedelic lights, with a smaller raised fingerrest guard below the strings that is adjustable for height. The bass mounts 2 of the familliar Danelectro "lipstick" pickups, with an elaborate control rig mounted on a sweeping chrome panel across the lower body. The controls consist of an individual volume knob for each pickup, a master volume and a bank of 4 slide switches, 2 acting as pickup on/off and 2 as tone modifiers. The finish on this example is very special-a Candy Apple Red nearly identical to what Fender employed around the same time. The Coral solidbodies were listed as available in "25 Custom Color" finishes on special order, of which this is one. This bass is likely one of a limited number produced at all, and may be nearly unique in this most attractive-and flashy-livery. Very nice overall, all original and complete except missing the thumbrest and mute pads. There are some small dings, stains and chips to the finish and some very small divots in the fingerboard, but the bass very little playwear overall. It looks like at some point perhaps someone thought about replacing the bridge but changed their mind-there are some shallow lines into the finish around the bridge base plate that look like razor marks, the purpose of which is now lost to history. You have to look fairly closely to notice this. This bass remains an excellent player with a very fast neck, one of the nicer '70's Mustangs we have had. Well-we can say this for sure-someone PLAYED this bass! The finish shows what is now termed "heavy relic" status-and this is the hard wearing '70's Fender Poly we're talking about here. The patina is epically smoked and darkened, especially on the lacquer-overcoated headstock. The body shows wear everywhere and the areas of arm and belt buckle wear are practically art pieces in and of themselves. The pickguard is an old WD replacement (with a tiny crack at the jack)` but the pickup and pots (all dated to 1974) are original, as is everything else but the jack. At just over 8 lbs. this is one of the lightest and handiest 1970's Precisions we have ever had, and it is a super comfortable and great sounding bass with tons of growl. Beat to hell, cool as heck, a real survivor of who knows what Rock/Punk/Blues brutality and ready to power on into the next century. Includes a lightweight molded HSC. The initial inspiration came from the Who's John Entwistle; when Gibson approached him as to what he might like the company to make, he asked for a long-scale Explorer bass with active electronics. The RD (which stood rather prosaically for the corporate-speak "Research and Development") was what emerged from this request, although it was not quite what John asked for! The body is maple in a modified Explorer shape, with the curves rounded down somewhat.

The extra-long scale maple neck has a 2-and-2 headstock, and down at the bridge the strings run through the body. The electronics are the most interesting feature; the two pickups are active, with boost/cut tone controls and an "expansion/compression" switch. This design was contributed by Bob Moog, who was technically working for CMI at the time. CMI was trying to position Gibson in the vanguard of electric guitar developments, as pioneered by the likes of Alembic, and the RD series stands as at the least a bold attempt to modernize the company's offerings. What emerged is a large, rather heavy but powerful sounding bass guitar that is utterly distinctive in both look and sound!

Overall length is 48 1/2 in.
