The wooden-body version of Triolian was only available for only a very brief period, introduced in late 1928 and discontinued in the last quarter 1929. National had tried a triple-cone version of this wood-body instrument (hence the name "Triolian") but quickly found the concept of a budget tricone unworkable. The single cone design proved much easier and cheaper to make, but as National was more equipped to work with metal than wood the stamped steel body was adapted as a more efficient production expediency. This version was quickly replaced by the much more common metal body Triolian, built in the thousands through the 1930's.

There are many differences between this early Triolian and the later common models. This guitar's twelve fret basswood neck has an unbound, painted fingerboard with black dot inlay. The laminated wooden body is painted yellow with very subtle airbrushed red and blue highlights. The words "PATAPP FOR" are stamped directly on top between fingerboard just above resonator cover. There is a beautiful full-color stencil of Hula girl on back and an ocean wave on front, both with far less chipping and loss than is common for this instrument. The tuners are the same engraved-plate Waverly strips used on the Tricones of the period.

The single cone guitars that descended from this first model ensured the National company's survival during the depression, being far less expensive to produce than the elaborate Tricone that had previously been their sole product . This style Triolian is historically significant, representative of both the earliest commercial single-cone guitar and the first wooden body resonator instrument. It is also a wonderful playing and sounding guitar, quite unlike its steel-bodied brothers in both feel and sound.

Overall length is 39 in. (99.1 cm.), 14 in. (49 mm.).
This is a very nice original example of this rare model with a straight neck, exceptional playability and a deep warm sound. Both the finish and the decorations are in very good condition with only comparatively minor wear and flaking. There is wear to the fingerboard through the paint in the lower position, and a typical pickwear spot on the metal coverplate. The neck has been cleanly reset but there is a large scratch on the bass side of the heel. A section of the top veneeron the lower treble bout has had the veneer patched back in expertly-it is virtually unnoticeable-and the tailpiece has a strong but fairly obvious braze on the bend. In the most severe year of the great Depression, any sale was a good sale and National contracted with Sears to manufacture these instruments for them at a special lower price. The guitar is identical to National's lowest-end metalbody instrument, the Duolian, except the coverplate has fewer holes in a simpler pattern and there are no headstock markings except an "R" series (for Roebuck!) serial number and patent marking on the top edge. The neck is natural finish mahogany with an 'ersatz ebony' composite fingerboard and is slimmer than many period National necks with a subtle "U" contour. The fingerboard dots are grained ivoroid plastic instead of pearl, and the board is unbound. The finish is the standard Duolian green crinkle with a lot of patterning in the paint.

These proprietary guitars sold in the Sears & Roebuck catalog for $29.00 (plus freight!) while a regular Duolian retailed in stores at $32.50, and thus were a great value for Sears' customers. The wooden-body version of Triolian was only available for only a very brief period, introduced in late 1928 and discontinued in the last quarter 1929. National had tried a triple-cone version of this wood-body instrument (hence the name "Triolian") but quickly found the concept of a budget tricone unworkable. The single cone design proved easier and cheaper to make, but as National was more equipped to work with metal than wood the stamped steel body was adapted as a more efficient production expediency.

There is a beautiful full-color stencil of Hula girl on back and an ocean wave on front, both unique to this model. The tuners are the same fairly fancy engraved-plate Waverly strips used on the Tricones of the period.

It is also a wonderful sounding guitar, with a deep and surprisingly sweet tone quite unlike its steel-bodied brothers in both feel and tone.

Overall length is 39 in. (99.1 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 3/8 in. (8.6 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 1 15/16 in. (49 mm.). This instrument is in exceptionally well preserved condition, with only extremely minor wear to the often quite fragile original Polychrome paint finish. The unique Hula Girl and Hawaiian wave stencils-which have commonly flaked away at least partially away-are complete except for some checking. The only alterations is the "National Triolian" headstock decal is a reproduction and the saddle has been carefully dialed in with a setback for better intonation. The action is currently 5/32" at the 12th fret; it works extremely well for Delta-style blues playing with fingers and a slide. To modern tastes it is a bit stiff as a standard playing guitar (although well within the norms of 1929!) but the exceptional undisturbed state of the painted finish makes us reluctant to recommend altering the instrument's original neckset. There can't be many more of these early Triolians extant in this sort of condition; this one even includes the rare original HSC also nearly perfectly preserved. The Duolian was introduced in 1930 as the least expensive metal-body resonator National guitar; offered at $32.50 with a thin-gauge steel body and minimal appointments the model may well have enabled the company to survive the early 1930's. The steel body has a crystalline silver/green baked-on enamel finish the company called "Frosted Duco" and the first style "flat cut" F-holes. The natural-finish 12-fret mahogany neck is topped with a squared-off slotted headstock with the "National Duolian" logo stamped into the face with the serial number hand-impressed along the top edge. The original openback strip tuners are the plainer of the two styles used. The resonator coverplate is the later type with small diamond cut-outs, nicknamed the "Chicken feet" design by collectors. This is the Style 0 variant known as the "Dire Straits" model, due to use by Mark Knopfler in the 1980's and the iconic appearance of one on the band's "Brothers in Arms" album cover. Some National aficionados consider this version the ultimate Style 0, while others prefer the original 12-fret series. We think that both versions can sound great, and this is a particularly nice player.

Overall length is 38 in. (96.5 cm.), 14 in. This guitar remains in nicely original condition with all original parts (including tuners, cone, biscuit and tailpiece) but some general wear. There is some scuffing and scratching into the plating, more on the back than front-there is some fairly heavy scratching on the back-and some typical plating wear from play overall. The neck shows some dings and scuffing (a couple of deep dinge are into the wood) but no major wear areas through the finish. This guitar has just emerged from a neckset and refret, and is an excellent player with a lovely sound, equally suited for Delta Blues or the more modern styles. The 1930's style resonator cone is set into a small solid wood body covered in yellow pearloid, with a second coverplate on the back to allow some sound to escape. There is a plastic pickguard on the upper half of the body, decorated with pinstripes, a script "RESO-PHONIC" and a metal plate National shield logo. The bolt-on neck is a very short scale, similar to the one used on the company's budget Supro student guitars. The experimental coverplate as seen on this guitar was a labor-saving attempt by Nationalit mounts with small recessed hooks and a single locking screw instead of multiple screws around the edge. There is a wear spot down to the brass on the coverplate in the usual spot. The neck finish has been polished out but not heavily oversprayed, the headstock is still original with some fairly heavy wear. There is a repaired crack to the bass side of the neck coming down from the headstock about 3", with a smaller mirror version on the treble side. This was not a full headstock break and is well sealed up but still visible. The National logo decal is mostly gone, and the tuners are 1960's Waverly strips, with a relic-y look but still in good working order. The nut is newer but the frets are still original and the fingerboard shows a lot of wear through the "ebonized" finish. The cone and biscuit are still original, the saddle is newer. The National Tricone is generally considered the best sounding of all acoustic Hawaiian guitars, and this is an excellent player's example. Built just as the 1920's Jazz Age party was crashing down, this is a wonderful example of the 'state of the art' acoustic steel from the jazz age. The Style 4 Tricone was the most superlative resonator instruments made by National, the top of the line from 1928-1940. Much rarer than the plain Style 1, the Style 4 with its extremely elaborate "chrysanthemum" engraving is the fanciest and to many the most aesthetically pleasing of all Nationals. These ultra-modern fancy geophonic guitars would continue to be built until WWII, but in small numbers only as the great bulk of National's production from 1930 on would be the far cheaper single cone instruments and eventually electrics.

The Style 4 features a bound ebony fingerboard inlayed with pearl diamonds mounted to the integral square metal-sheathed neck. The headstock is faced in pearloid with an engraved National shield logo at the top. The flowing floral engraving pattern was supposedly designed by George Beauchamp himself and is extremely finely executed; this version has fronds running through the coverplate as was standard after 1928. The guitar plays perfectly and has the smooth deep tricone sound, fabulous for both any Hawaiian or other steel guitar playing.

Overall length is 38 7/8 in. This Style 4 has some wear overall but remains an excellent player. The plated finish is still relatively bright; there is scuffing and wear but no major plating loss. The elevated handrest on the coverplate shows a repair with a piece of different metal brazed in on the bass side; this was done well but not perfectly and is still visible, with the engraving in the region worn down somewhat. There is some wear to the top "woven" soundhole design where it looks like the slide bar may have banged into the top repeatedly. The pearloid headstock shows some wear but the engraved logo is still crisp. The tuners are excellent modern reproductions of the original Waverly strips, mounted correctly in the "reverse" position. The cones and saddle unit are still original, and the lush original sound is still quite evident. With National Tricone guitars selling for over $100 and the flashy brass-bodied Style 0 at $62.50 the fairly plain single-cone Triolian made the powerful National sound available to a much wider range of players. The body has a couple of wear spots through the finish in the standard places where the player's fingers make contact. The enameled finish is otherwise fairly well preserved with some average edge chipping, the back is cleaner than many! Widely considered the finest acoustic instrument ever created for slide playing, the roundneck "Spanish" Tricone is also an excellent and totally unique-sounding guitar for many other styles of play. The round neck Tricone is considerably rarer then the square neck "Hawaiian" variant and has long been sought after as the ultimate acoustic blues/slide guitar.

This particular Style 1 is from 1932, built when the Tricones were being heavily out-sold by National's newer (and much cheaper) single cone resonator designs. The Style 1 retailed for $125.00 in the early 1930's, a tremendous sum at the height of the Depression, so it's hardly surprising that relatively few were sold.

This guitar is an excellent playing example suitable for both open-tuned slide and regular Spanish play with the rich sound only Tricones can produce. The Style 1 with the unengraved body is the 'purest' example of National's Art Deco aesthetic, and mysteriously often seems to be the best-sounding as well, although there is no scientific reason why that should be!

Overall length is 38 1/2 in. (46 mm.).

A nicely original guitar including cones, T-bar, saddle, tailpiece, and tuners (installed in the reversed "modern" worm-over-cog position with replaced screws). Recent neckset, refret, and new nut ensure this is a great player. Some minor plating wear overall and blotchiness on the back, a few small dents and dings but generally a very nice example, with a fine original HSC.
