The head is covered with finely executed colored-ink drawings depicting an early flapper-style bathing beauty, a bobbed-hair girl's portrait and a Little-Nemo-derived redhead with a fur-trimmed skirt. This is an extremely rare instrument, much more so than the company's earlier 'trap-door' style large-rim guitar banjos built prior to 1925. This one was made in 1928, one of a very few batches completed that year. The banjo is built on the standard 11" Mastertone rim (fully equivalent to the TB-3 from the same year) still with the older-style two-piece tube-and-plate flange but now equipped with the then-new 40-hole solid archtop tone ring. This is an important feature of this particular instrument as the earlier models have the less well regarded floating ball-bearing tone ring; the sound on this banjo is more focused with less overring and more snap.

The neck is a substantial round-backed affair with a bound dot inlaid ebony fingerboard and a guitar-shaped headstock with "The Gibson" inlaid in pearl script and six "Grover Patent" pancake tuners. The Mastertone GB-3 is one of the coolest Gibson rarities and easily one of the best Banjo-guitars extant. Very nice original condition; some very minor wear and typical checking but no repairs or alterations. The only hardware change is the two rim screws on the Kersher tailpiece. Still fitted with a nice period (likely original) Rodgers head (some dirt and staining but great sound) and bridge. Although a relatively inexpensive model in the Vega line the Little Wonder is still a robust high-quality instrument, lacking only the fancier tone rings and bracket band of the White Lady and Tubaphone. This banjo features a heavy laminated maple rim and neck and very thick ebony fingerboard, simple sheathed brass wire tone ring and standard brackets mounted thru the rim. The rim edge is bound in tortoise celluloid with the bottom edge laquered black.

These beautifully made Vegas are probably the best open back guitar-banjos ever built, and sound great for everything from New Orleans Jazz ("Play that thing, Mr. St Cyr!" - with Louis Armstrong's Hot Five Johnny St Cyr used a six-string Vega) to Old-Time Country.

Overall length is 35 7/8 in. The instrument is generally the same as the earlier version but has a pearloid headpiece with a painted-on "Ludwog" script logo and fancier fingerboard inlay-the overall effect is a much flashier instrument! Weymann's original Megaphonic Orchestra model banjos of this period are some of the most beautiful and elegant tenor and plectrum banjos ever created; the company's challenge was how to keep the same qualities in a lower priced instrument. One solution used here was to use a cast metal rim with the heavy metal tone ring mounted on top of it, all set into a resonator which is laminated wood. Much of the hardware (including the hoop, hooks and flange pieces) is the same as higher-priced Weymann models -the overall appearance is similar but these instruments sold at considerably lower prices.

Despite its budget constraints this is a well-made banjo, with Weymann's customary quality and attention to detail evident. The UB-4 was introduced in 1926 and features fancy shaped pearl inlay in the bound rosewood fingerboard while the headstock has a pearl inlaid "The Gibson" logo. The bound-back resonator is fitted to a diamond pattern flange; all hardware is nickel plated. The Grover friction tuners are fitted with ivoroid buttons. Most Gibson banjo-ukes have no serial number-this actually has a standard Gibson FON stamped into the rim and chalked in the resonator, as was the practice at the time. In 1927 the model UB-5 was identical to this style 4 except for gold-plated hardware, and examples of both models were built in this batch. This is a great "professional grade" Gibson banjo-uke from the '20's-perfect for the George Formby sound and an excellent piece for any application requiring the best of banjo-ukes!

Overall length is 22 1/2 in. (57.2 cm.), 8 in. (20.3 cm.) diameter head, and 3 1/4 in. (8.2 cm.) in depth at side. Scale length is 13 1/2 in. (343 mm.). Very nice original condition; all original finish and hardware except an old but not period head and bridge. Relatively clean overall-there is some play wear; there is some scuffing and dings to the resonator back, a spot of wear on the top side of the heel and the plating to the hoop and hooks shows some noticeable loss due to corrosion. A fabulous playing and sounding instrument, as loud a banjo-uke as we have ever heard! Included a modern mandolin HSC that is a functional but inexact fit. Excellent - Condition.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0672/8702/3756/files/01_be6c94f1-c315-4665-ba6e-2d226c1eb340.jpg?v=1774331066
lange-banner-blue-banjo-ukulele-1925-6815
Lange Banner Blue Banjo Ukulele (1925)
Banner Blue Model Banjo Ukulele, made by Lange, c. 1925, made in New York City, natural finish, maple neck and rim.

Overall length is 21 in.
