The guitar is an excellent player, completely unmodified and very clean except for some very small paint chips on the headstock edges and a couple on the body. The amp case is newly serviced works very well; it shows some very light wear to the covering but is quite nice overall-we did replace the 1960's ungrounded cord with a 3-prong (the original is included) and the original trem pedal been replaced by a somewhat more substantial round-housing model. One of the nicer examples of this classic garage band combo we have had, includes the original instrument cord (with plastic mounting bracket) the amplifier instructions and the original shipping label from Danelectro to Sears!. Its angled rectangular body is similar to several other Magnatone models, including one mounted to the amp with a height-adjustable post. The guitar is very teacher-friendly; cleverly tunable only with an Allen wrench so the young whippersnappers taking lessons couldn't mess around with re-tuning it themselves! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe amp is Magnatone's \"Student\" model M-199-3-J mounted off to one side on the bottom of the box with a nice little Jansen 8\" speaker off to the other. The steel is hard-wired to the amp, but there are two inputs on the faceplate so your friends can play as well! Both the guitar and amp\/case are original and complete with minimal wear AND they are still accompanied by the original shipping box that arrived at some lucky home from Sears in late 1965! Large numbers of these guitar\/amp sets were sold in the 1960s, but only a handful of the decorated printed cardboard boxes have survived.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis 1448 was the less expensive of the two models of Danelectro-made Amp-in-case Silvertone 1960s guitars, sold exclusively through Sears. \"Gee dad, I really wanna electric guitar\" rang in countless parents' ears in 1964-5, and this nifty and budget-friendly combo ($x for the set) was a well-planned and easy solution. Once \"mastered\" they became the original equipment for thousands of aspiring teen combos in the mid-1960s, played in garages and school auditoriums across the nation. This one dates to the peak guitar-boom year of 1965, when millions of teenagers were looking for anything with 6 strings, particularly if it could be plugged in. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe 1448 guitar is built on a semi-hollow Masonite-and-pine asymmetrical double cutaway body with sharp curling \"horns\". It is finished in black sparkle lacquer (\"the kids love sparkles\" was the wisdom at Sears) with white vinyl edge trim and a white Masonite pickguard. The fittings include one great-sounding Dan-O lipstick pickup with tone\/volume controls and the traditional Dan-O chrome plate bridge with rosewood saddle. The short-scale neck ends in a Silvertone logo \"paddle\" headstock with skate key-style tuners. This one retains its original pinned-to-the-pickguard cord, which was usually the first thing broken. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe amp-in-case half of the dup is a brilliant, if somewhat heavy solution to including everything in one package. (Pity the 11-year-old who had to carry this to lessons!) The amp itself (built into the lid) is rudimentary at best but does make a nicely gnarly sound when cranked. To a kid plugging in for the first time it must have been a revelation. This one works as well as it ever did, with the original microphonic Sears Silvertone tubes still intact. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is a just a very little used example of these infinitely cool little classics; it really looks like it has been sitting in someone's basement or attic for most of the last 55+ years. The box is a bit beat up but more-or-less intact, the amp works OK but the guitar is the really functional piece. The Model 1448 guitar is still a neat piece of playable '60s fretted nostalgia and one of the best bargains in an American-made vintage guitar going well into the 21st century.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eOverall length is 35 in. (88.9 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5\/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 23 1\/2 in. (597 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3\/4 in. (44 mm.). \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhile not absolutely perfect this is a superbly preserved set, showing only some very light wear and little sign of ever having been really played. Most of the wear visible is to the outside of the case, as would be expected. The vinyl siding on the guitar has a few marks but remains fully intact, the finish has only some small marks on the back from prolonged contact with the vinyl cord. The knob inserts are yellowed, as they are actually made of paper! Both guitar and amp remain all original and complete, even the thin black cord pinned to the body (easily removable) is intact and working. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWith a nice, straight neck, this is as good a playing and sounding example as we have had. The amp case has only minor wear to the edges and a bit of discoloration to the speaker grill. It works as intended; somewhat noisy (they all were!) but who cares when it is cranked? We have left it original and unmodified. The shipping box by contrast is fairly well worn but more or less intact, the cool graphics still display nicely. Overall this remains a great garage band set that looks like it's lived a long time in the garage, waiting for that first practice. \"House of the Rising Sun\", anyone? Over the next couple of decades the firm would be supplied by several different subcontractors including Rickenbacker and Regal; in this case the National\/Dobro corp. is the builder. This gold-washed cast aluminum steel is a relabeled version of the first Supro model, in itself a rare and very early down-market electric instrument, possibly the first such guitar intended primarily for students. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEssentially this is a simplified version of National\/Dobro's first generation of electric lap steels, using the same blade pickup and cast aluminum construction in a considerably smaller and lighter form. These instrument came to market soon after the Rickenbacker \"Frying Pan\" and use similar materials, the Supro version being closer in feel to the rick Than the larger and heavier National and Dobro instruments. Bronson must have contracted with National early on, as this re-branded steel is identical to the first 1935 Supro version. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Deco-styled long thin body is an aluminum casting with the tailpiece and pickup housing cast in, finished out in a silvery\/gold enamel. A wooden guitar fingerboard is affixed to the top, not fretted but with dots and inlaid lines for visual guidance. This first National pickup is mounted from the rear; it has a blade polepiece with an internal magnet and is controlled by a single volume control near the back edge of the body. The minimalist headstock has the central area cut away with gently rounded edges on the face; it mounts openback Grover strip tuners with metal buttons. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis very striking design is a pure Deco classic, simple but elegant despite its budget intentions. \"Bronson Singing Electric\" is emblazoned on a decal on the face of the body, while another decal on the back announces this as the product of National-Dobro Corp. The small amp is not branded at all; it is typical for the time, putting out 3-5 watts with a single volume control, perforated metal coverplate over the speaker and a removable back panel. This rare set is not only the earliest known style of Bronson-branded electric, but the earliest Supro electric instrument and one of a handful of the first commercial electric steels extant. It is a neat piece of history and still a fully playable instrument.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eOverall length is 32 3\/8 in. (82.2 cm.), 6 1\/16 in. (15.4 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3\/8 in. (3.5 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 23 in. (584 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7\/8 in. (48 mm.). \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis 85 year old set is fully functional and sounds really cool, albeit not particularly loud. The guitar remains all original except for the plastic saddle mounted on the pickup housing (the original would have been bone or metal). There are some small dings and chips to the finish, the flocking on the bottom is somewhat worn and one celluloid dot is missing from the fingerboard revealing the screw beneath. One tuner shaft is fairly seriously bent, but the peg still functions fine. The original fitted guitar case is nicely intact, with the remnants of a period sticker on the lid. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe amplifier has been fully serviced with some cap work to keep it running and a new 3-prong cord. The cabinet shows some general wear but is fully intact, a new handle being the only change. The set functions as intended, with a sweeter sound that is less bright than many pre-war steels. The polished-round strings on the guitar appear period, or at least quite old but still sound fine; we have left them in place for the time being but of course they can easily be changed as desired. This is simply a neat piece of history, a very early electric instrument and still unique looking and sounding lap steel. Built with elegant, simple hardwood cabinets (inspiring the collector's nickname \"Woodie\"), their ruggedness, sound quality and reliability far surpassed most standards of electric amplification of the time.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eReleased in the spring of '46 and lasting only about a year and a half, the three models shared a design look and some circuitry. The hardwood cabinets came in \"gleaming blonde maple\", \"black walnut\" and \"dark mahogany\". Their plush grille cloths came in red, blue and yellow\/gold, with matching material on the rear lower panel. The front has three metal strips running vertically over the speaker opening. The thicker center strip is flanked by two thinner ones, which Fender claimed added \"flash and brilliance to their already sparkling appearance\". Indeed, as guitar author Tom Wheeler notes in \"The Soul of Tone: Celebrating 60 Years of Fender Amps\", \"Princetons, Deluxes and Pros would be cornerstones of the line for much of the next 60 years.\" This early model is the lodestone from which all of would spring, a sublime if humble-looking piece of the earliest Fender grail.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe matching Deluxe lap steel is also a rare early Fender product, with Leo's original \"Direct String\" pickup mounted on a sculpted hardwood body with volume and tone controls. This last set it apart from the \"Student\" model that only had volume! These are nicely laid out and fall perfectly under the fingers when playing. The original small pots are dated to the 38th week of 1946. Construction is very simple with a thin natural lacquer on the one-piece body and some fascinatingly crude hand routing under the metal coverplate, done after the body was finished! The headstock is covered by a chromed plate with an etched \"Fender Electric Instrument Company, Fullerton California\" lightning bolt logo, a basic design carried into the 1950s. This sits above an etched and painted chromed fingerboard, the headstock sporting typical period openback strip tuners. The steel carries a very early serial # B-79 on the back edge, making it as one of the first 100 or so ever made.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eHeight is 12 1\/2 in. (31.8 cm.), 13 1\/2 in. (34.3 cm.) width, and 7 3\/4 in. (19.7 cm.) deep. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is a beautiful, very nicely preserved and original example of one of the earliest Fender amps we have ever seen. The cabinet is in fairly good shape considering the amp is celebrating its 76th birthday! There's some typical wear and minor scuffs, but the very thin \"gleaming blonde maple\" finish is largely intact. The chassis shows some typical corrosion overall with the panel itself in excellent shape with only minor wear overall. The plush red grille cloth is mostly untarnished save for one minor puncture and the protective metal strips are in great shape as well with just a few minor scratches along the edges of the larger center strip. The rear panel cloth is in fabulous condition as well.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eElectrically, the amp remains nicely original. The Jensen 8-inch field-coil F8R speaker is original, bearing the code 220-616, dating it to 1946. The original cone has received some TLC and sounds great! Both the power and output transformers appear original, the former bearing the marking 5097A. Both pots appear original as well. The amp has otherwise received our typical maintenance and servicing, including replacement of electrolytic caps, a grounded 3-prong power cord, cleaning of all sockets, pots and jacks and biasing to spec. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe accompanying steel also has some general wear, mostly to the top finish from a picker's fingers long ago. The chrome has some wear spots but is generally well preserved. Whatever flocking was once glued to the back has long since flaked off. The original pickup has been perfectly re-wound by Tom Brantley; many of these early pickups require this today. It sounds great and the work is pretty much undetectable. The early-style pots and wiring remains original, as do the tuners with a couple of buttons appearing replaced. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis set is a fabulous example of nearly pre-historic Fender history, from the very beginning of Fender's legacy of great amplifiers. It has an updated 3 prong power cord but is otherwise all original. This Airline amp has that classic tube amp thick clean and smooth crunch tone when driven. The original Jensen C12R sounds strong.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eHeight is 17 in. (43.2 cm.), 20 in. (50.8 cm.) width, and 8 in. (20.3 cm.) deep. It has no switch options, build with high-quality components, and is identifiable with a singular marking: \"Tom Verlaine's Dyna-Mult.\" Surely, knowing the purpose of his tube amp explorations, we bet that this little box got the most use for amplifier shootouts as Verlaine auditioned tubes in search of his perfect sound.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eHeight is 2 1\/2 in. (6.4 cm.), 3 1\/4 in. (8.3 cm.) width, and 1 1\/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth at deepest point. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis simple little utility is the only of it's kind, completely unaltered with only a few signs of use. Of course, the main thing to see here is the charming label confirming the provenance of this signal splitter. Verlaine's unique playing remains a sonic touchstone and required listening for several generations of electric guitarists.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAn assemblage of selected components curated and owned by Tom Verlaine, this head and cab combo is a unique addition to any collection.\u003cbr\u003e The Pathfinder E-20 amplifier was originally marketed in the 1960s as a PA system amp for microphones and turntables. A riveted metal plaquette shows the serial number 366700. The unit has been modified for guitar use by the addition of a 1\/4\" jack for a speaker output but is otherwise unchanged. This class AB design features a preamp stage consisting of one 12AX7 and an unusual 6BR8 which contains both a pentode line driver and a triode phase splitter, these feed two EL84 power tubes for a total output of around 20 watts. We wonder if it was used to announce at cattle auctions, or similar events!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Jensen Imperial CA-12 speaker cabinet (a.k.a. the Jensen Coaxial Extended Range Bass Reflex Reproducer with High Frequency Control), was manufactured from the late 1930s to the mid-40s. This particular example has been modified by Verlaine from its original 600 ohm coaxial speaker configuration and fitted with a 70s 12\" Univox alnico speaker. The striking cabinet features elegant art deco-era stylings, finished in an attractive walnut lacquer and a woven golden patterned grille cloth behind the three wooden protective accents. The rear panel bears a label with specifications and instructions, as well as the serial number C3782.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eHeight is 32 1\/2 in. (82.6 cm.), 27 3\/4 in. (70.5 cm.) width, and 13 in. (33 cm.) deep. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eCosmetically, this mighty PA head and cabinet set is in nice shape, showing only moderate general wear overall. The control panel is clean with minimal wear and retains all the original knobs, as well as the neat little settings indicators underneath. The Jensen cabinet is in beautiful condition overall, retaining its beautiful dark walnut finish. The exterior shows only minimal surface wear, mostly occasional dings and scratches around edges and corners. The grille cloth is very clean, showing only some minor tearing towards the lower edges but remains relatively taut and in great shape overall. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eElectrically, the amplifier is nicely original save for Tom's modifications.
