It's even carved in TINY litters on the cap of the volume knob! No other alterations; quite a bit of general wear (mostly to the back and sides, and the back of the neck) the face is still fairly clean with good colorto the sunburst. The guitar looks like it may have sat in a damp case long ago resulting in some heavy finish flaking on the back edge and sides. All original hardware in fine condition except pickguard is missing. By the look of the hardware, this was added when the guitar was new-possibly at the factory but more likely by a Gibson dealer-the pickguard cut is not perfectly clean. All parts are period correct including the wiring and tall, numbered knobs; the pickup is mounted a bit farther back than on the typical ETG-150 resulting in a brighter sound, also enhanced by the spruce top. Like most Vox guitars sold in the US, this one was built at the Eko factory in Recanti, Italy. Vox brand owners JMI in Dartford, Kent was already overtaxed by 1964 supplying Vox amplifiers to the UK and world markets. Instead of expanding their guitar-making facilities to meet the world-wide demand JMI outsourced the bulk of production to the Italian firm. These Eko-made Vox guitars are more consistent, both in style and quality, than their English-made cousins- in some ways better made. By the time Thomas Organ in California had taken over US distribution of JMI's products, nearly all the Vox guitars they handled would be of Italian parentage.

The teardrop-shaped Mark series was originally a stylistic outgrowth of the trapezoidal-bodied Phantom line, indeed the earliest model was called the Phantom Mk.III. Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones got one of the first hand-built prototypes, and the exposure the model received in his hands in 1964-5 was quite enough to quickly make it the most sought after Vox guitar. The solidbody "Mark" series quickly expanded to include 6, 12 and 9 string guitars as well as a bass, all offered in several different finishes.

The Mark series hollow-bodied "Acoustic" line followed in 1966, using the body developed for the teardrop shape "Wyman Bass". This Mark VI's bright red-black-yellow sunburst is one of two standard finishes offered for the "Acoustic" models. The guitar features three single-coil original style Vox pickups with a wiring rig derived from the Stratocaster, i.e. master volume, two tone controls and a three-way switch. The vibrato is derived from JMI's "Hank B' Marvin' unit and is basically a copy of the solidbody Bigsby. Although the least expensive instrument in the Chet Atkins signature line, the Tennessean was still a relatively upscale guitar. Like all Atkins models it is fitted with a "Gretsch by Bigsby" vibrato; Only the 6119 used two single-coil Hi-lo'tron pickups. This model cost the not inconsiderable sum of $350.00 in 1962, the year it replaced the earlier full-hollowbody, single-pickup 6119. This example features the earliest unbound stenciled-on "F-holes" which are fairly inconspicuous on the dark finished body, no doubt the reason a white border was added to them within a year or so. Early '60's Tennesseans also have openback Waverly tuners rather than the Van Ghents used later, and lack the engraved headstock plaque added in 1964. The 6119 remained the only traditional single-cutaway guitar in the Atkins line, both the Country Gentleman and 6120 having become double-cutaways at the time.

This particular guitar has an extremely fine neck angle (often a sore point of this model) and is a relatively rare instrument, as the production of all Gretsch guitars and particularly Tennesseans went way up in the beatle-saturated world of 1964-67. Many 1960's artists made extensive use of this popular model, including George Harrison (most notably in the film "HELP!" and the Beatles '65 world tours) and David Crosby of The Byrds. Gerry Marsden (Gerry and the Pacemakers) toured and recorded extensively in 1963-4 with an early Tennessean exactly like this one. The Animals' Hilton Valentine recorded all the band's early material including "House of the Rising Sun" with this exact model. The sound is brighter than many other Gretsch models, due to the combination of single-coil pickups and thin body but with plenty of depth when required. Both versions were featured in countless '60's British invasion bands, including the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Manfred Mann and many more, as well as many blues, jazz and pop situations.

This guitar has typical mid-60's features: a bound, pearloid-trapezoid inlaid rosewood fingerboard; chrome pickup covers, nickel plated Tremotone vibrato tailpiece and nickel Tune-o-matic bridge with nylon saddles. The thin, double-cutaway single-bound body is fully hollow and the neck joins at the 16th fret.

The finish is a very nice light "teaburst" sunburst, the neck is the older 1 11/16 width that would shortly be narrowed, to many player's distaste! It also has the older style 60's style gold plastic "bonnet" metal-capped tone and volume knobs that were phased out in 1966. This guitar has the correct "Beatle" look (closest to George's personal instrument) and despite some condition issues is a good player's example at less than 1/2 the price of a excellent original example.

Overall length is 41 1/16 in. This guitar is a bit of a road warrior, but is a good gigging instrument. There is an old solid headstock repair, finished over but a with a visible splice. The lead pickup is restored to a correct period P-90; there was a humbucker installed previously with some routing involved but now all looks correct. All other hardware is original-the arm is missing from the Tremotone tailpiece. Typically great sound; includes a well-worn period correct HSC with a leather strap installed for a handle. All original; some wear overall (mostly to the back of the neck) and general checking and heavy ambering to the finish. The instrument appears to have been exposed to moisture at some point, there is some clouding and corrosion but no major damage. This early post-WWII ES-125 has seen a lot of use but still sounds great. There is a lot of playwear to the back of the neck, but the rest of the finish is not as heavily worn-in fact the top is quite clean. Most of the hardware is original; exceptions are the tailpiece (ia period Harmony-style trapeeze) and the bridge is the correct rosewood type but a more recent piece. There is an added Gibson strap button to the heel. Original period-specific features include the tall clear knobs (one is somewhat cloudy), earliest style Kluson deluxe tuners (with newer buttons) and most important the early and short-lived P-90 pickup with fixed magnet poles. This unit was discontinued just after this guitar was made; it has a subtly different sound than the common P-90 with a bit more bite. This is a nice player with a great vibe. Built on the same body and neck style as the highly sought-after Chet Atkins model 6120 these 6117's are often under-appreciated guitars, with the same "Great Gretsch Sound". This early example has two "PAF" filtertron pickups, an neo-classic fingerboard with no zero fret the "trestle braced" body construction with the top bracing arching down to meet the back. This is an especially desirable feature as it results in a stronger, tighter sounding guitar with much more resistance to feedback but was only used during this 1958-61 period. This is one of the nicer Gretsch's we have had recently, a real honey to play with a singing sound.

Overall length is 41 3/4 in. (106 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 5/8 in. (6.7 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.). This guitar is super clean overall; the finish is very well preserved with very little of play wear and a bright unfaded sunburst. There is little chipping under the bridge, otherwise the lacquer is hardly worn or checked at all. The only major issue is some typical shrinkage and first-stage cracking to the back binding (NOT on the top edge) and fillet in the cutaway; it is not crumbling and at this point does not affect play at all. There is a little pitting to the fingerboard but the frets are still quite good. A very good player, the neck angle is fine and the Filter'Tron pickups sound excellent. A really nice gigging Gretsch, priced to reflect the binding conditionnow just past its 50th birthday and going strong!
