This is a nice example of his later period work, hand signed and dated to January 1970. Before the already experienced Hauser met Andres Segovia, this was the type of guitar he, like all German luthiers, was accustomed to creating. After exposure to Segovia's Ramirez, Hauser soon changed direction and began building Spanish-style concert guitars which are still acclaimed as some of the very finest ever made. Hauser's earlier Germanic instruments are less known, but they are also among the finest of their type and show the impeccable craftsmanship for which Hauser and his descendants are still venerated.

This guitar was completed in 1925, and is signed and dated by the maker on a beautifully preserved label. Bridge and tuners are original; one of the bridge end ornaments has been neatly replaced, as has one bridge pin (the rest appear original to the guitar). In the late 19th Century Jose Ramirez I crafted guitars in a traditional Spanish pattern handed down from his mentor Francisco Gonzalez, and did not follow the more modern Torres-inspired ideas. As a result, his guitars now seem somewhat outside the main evolutionary line of the modern classical tradition.

This is a relatively elaborate instrument made of better grade woods, but not the largest or fanciest Ramirez style. The design has many Gonzalez-influenced features, including the point on the peghead, slightly domed soundboard, and large rosette. The rounded-end bridge with pearl inlay and a bone cap is typically Ramirez, as is the small Spanish slipper heel. All bindings are wood, with one set of pearl squares in the rosette. The solid peghead is faced with Brazilian rosewood and carries original pearl-inlaid violin style pegs. The label is hand dated 1899 and also bears an inscription ending in 1913 which appears to be a repair notation. There is also a label from "E. Goubert, Paris" which is either a seller's mark or repair notice.

While this instrument would have likely been used for vernacular Spanish music instead of a concert repertoire, it is not properly a classical of Flamenco guitar in the modern sense either; rather, it is an evolved version of the common ancestor to both. Ramirez's shop catered to all guitarists, and the lines dividing the styles of instrument were not as well-drawn at the turn of the last century. While his estranged brother Manuel went on to create increasingly modern guitars in a more Torres-influenced style, Jose I continued to build these older pattern instruments for a bustling clientele in Madrid well into the 20th century.

Taken on its own merits, although a small bodied instrument, this is also a wonderful playing guitar, with a surprisingly deep, supple, and extremely responsive sound with a true Spanish character.

Overall length is 36 in. This is a nice example of his late 1960's work, hand signed and dated to May 7 1969. The back and sides are made of lovely Brazilian rosewood with a subtle but slightly swirled grain figure The top has 4-ply wood binding with a maple outer layer, the bridge is Brazilian rosewood, and the front of the headstock is faced with Brazilian as well. As with many New York immigrant community instrument builders (like Del Pilar's contemporary John D'Angelico) the emphasis was on sound quality more than the sort of obsessive neatness detail that is seen on modern guitars-this guitar looks and feels handmade in the best way.

This is also a great sounding guitar; extremely responsive, even, warm and round sounding, with good volume and surprising projection. This would be an excellent instrument for Bossa Nova stylings as well as the straight classical repertoire. This instrument comes direct from the original owner, who bought it from "the old man" new in 1959when neither of them was that old yet! These Del Pilar guitars have become highly prized in recent years and Del Pilar's reputation as one of the finer, if relatively unsung luthiers in postwar America is still growing.

Overall length is 39 1/4 in. (99.7 cm.), 14 1/2 in. (36.8 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/8 in. (10.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 5/8 in. (651 mm.). Width of nut is 2 1/16 in. (52 mm.). Splendidly well preserved; there is some light play wear and two small hairline top cracks so cleanly sealed as to be practically invisible. Completely unaltered, this is a spectacular and very warm sounding example of this extremely well-regarded local maker's work. Includes the original hard shell case, decorated with some old travel stickers but also in excellent condition.
