By the early 1970's many Japanese instrument factories were turning out close cosmetic copies of American guitars, but few European manufacturers ever came this close to outright piracy! The Dynelectron is not built exactly like the original, but has a very light semi-hollow plywood body and solid wood neck with a rosewood fingerboard. The electronics and bridge are similar in appearance but subtly different in construction. The Dynelectron line contained several other models besides this one including a matching Guitarlin copy a fancier (and less Danno-like) bound-top sunburst Longhorn Bass. The brand was apparently built (or at least distributed) by Meazzi, the same Milan-based concern that issued the early-'60's tape echo made famous by the Shadows' Hank Marvin. This is a neat playing and sounding bass, strung like the original Danelectro with very light roundwound strings giving a very twangy tone. By the late '60's interest was already running high in the previous generation of 1950's instruments-by then the Precision bass had been heavily modified from its original form. CBS/Fender took notice of this, and the now-renamed "Telecaster" bass was the result. This 1968 bass is a fairly accurate re-creation of the original Precision of 1952; the maple neck, "slab" ash body, two-saddle bridge and string-wrapped single coil pickup are all accurate to the original. Small differences included the white pickguard (in place of the original black) and the newer style tuners with "egg" shaped buttons.

This particular bass carries a neckdate of May 68, with pots dated to 1966 like virtually all late '60's Fenders. It features a single-piece maple neck with the "skunk stripe" om the back where the trussrod is laid in-the very first Telecaster basses had a maple cap fingerboard, changed almost immediately to this style. The neck still carries the older style nitrocellulose finish, whild the body finish is the blonde, slightly heavier nitro introduced in '68. This is a very solid, great playing and powerful sounding bass with an upfront tone with plenty of muscle.

Overall length is 46 in. (116.8 cm.), 12 7/8 in. (32.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 34 in. (864 mm.). Width of nut is 1 13/16 in. (46 mm.). Beautiful rather clean and unfaded original blonde finish with some light checking, one spot of armwear on the top rim, some finger wear behind the pickup and several small burn marks inside the lower cutaway from an old-style curly cord left there too long. The pickards on these earliest Telecaster Basses were an unusual single-layer white nitrocellulose that has prover very unstable over time; few if any have survived intact. This bass has a perfect reproduction of this guard-the stains from the outgassing original can be seen around the lower end of the fingerboard. The frets, finish and all electronics are original (these early Tele bass pickups have often been replaced) and this is a very good sounding bass. Includes the original HSC in rather battered condition. Along with the equally striking teardrop-shaped Mark series, the Phantoms were born at JMI in Dartford, Kent in the early '60's but the majority of production examples were sourced from the Eko guitar factory in Recanti, Italy. The Phantom IV bass is one of Vox's most imposing instruments; unlike the short-scale very thin-necked layout of most Vox basses these are a full 34" scale with a big wide neck based on the Fender Precision. The two pickups provide a wide range of tonal options; there are not a lot of 1960's basses that provide this combination of practical playability and wicked cool looks! This is a very nice example, complete with the typical original Vox oblong hard case. A garage rock classic as used by "Fang" Volk of Paul Revere and the Raiders and Michael Jay of the Fuzztones, among others!

Overall length is 49 in. Overall very nice condition; All original hardware and finish with less checking than commonly seen on these Italian Vox instruments. There are several patched areas of finish on the body edges (you have to look closely to see them) and one noticeable finish chip in the back of the neck, otherwise very clean looking bass. The pickguard has less shrinkage than most and no broken corners (a real rarity on an Italian Phantom!) and the logo is crisp and clear. There are two extra screws in the 'guard from where the fingerrest was moved at one point and an extra strap button added to the neck heel (for better balance); no other alterations. Nice solid neck, this is a better player than many of these and better preserved than most! This particular bass is a very late example from the last year of production; the only major change from earlier models is a double-cutaway body in place of the earlier singlecut style. The very lightweight flat-topped fully hollow body features one excellent sounding DeArmond pickup. The neck is thick but comfortable, with a 30" scale dot-inlaid rosewood fingerboard. The bass's most distinctive cosmetic feature is the large white plastic off-center pickguard, which certainly gives it an unmistakeable look! The H-22 was the model used extensively in the mid-1960's by both Muff Winwood in the Spencer Davis Group and Ronnie Lane of the Small Faces, and its agressively thumpy tone can be clearly heard on many recordings. The Danelectro Longhorn Model 4423 was introduced in 1958 alongside a matching guitar and 6-string bass, and after a quick re-location of the treble pickup in 1959 survived through the 1960's with only minor alterations. Listed at $150.00, this was Danelectro's most expensive bass instrument up until the late 60's. Despite being one of the New Jersey company's best-remembered creations, the Longhorn series are all actually fairly rare, and appear to have been heavily outsold by the "Standard" models (called "shorthorns" in retrospect) that retailed around $50.00 less in the '60's.

Then and now, the Longhorn bass is a delight to play; the small, light semi-hollow body is extremely handy and the two Danelectro "lipstick tube" pickups produce a bright and punchy sound. With the short-scale neck set deep into the body and the bridge near the bottom end the instrument is very compact, being no longer than many guitars. These basses have an eccentric wiring scheme with concentric pots: the upper shaft carries as an on/off flipper for each pickup with a volume knob on the lower section. The tone is pre-set and controlled by blending the two pickups; many users found this system confusing or unreliable in actual use and most surviving examples have been modified. This instrument has all original electronics; the instrument's only modification appears to be the substitution long ago of Waverly strip tuners (as used on 1950's Danelectros) for the 1960's style "Skate Key" tuners this instrument almost certainly came with. The wooden "flipper" knobs are brown instead of the usual white, but appear original .

This particular bass dates to 1965, the same year as the 3 (!) basses John Entwistle bought in London to record the Who's iconic "My Generation" single; the story goes that as the instruments but not the unique strings had been imported to the UK. Every time he broke one of the thin, roundwound strings on a recording session, he had to buy a new bass as there were no replacements available! Several other prominent bassists made use of the Longhorn in the 1960's, including Jack Bruce who was pictured with one during the New York sessions for the Cream's DISREALI GEARS LP. When the Traveling Wilburys posed with their coolest guitars in the 1980's, erstwhile bassist Tom Petty selected a Longhorn. We are pleased to offer this very nice example of one of our favorite bass instruments.

Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 13 1/8 in. Essentially the bass version of a 12-string guitar, the H-8 is strung in octaves with a higher string above each bass string. The sound is similar to a bass and guitar playing in unison, and can create a very rich tonal effect. The instrument's features are typically Hagstrom-a sculpted solid body with very slim neck, excellent sounding hi-fi pickups and a bank of slide switches for controlling them. Despite the imposing appearance it's very easy to play, with a standard 30 1/2" short scale fingerboard, very low action and Hagsrtom adjustable bridge. Perhaps the oddest feature visually is the mix of large and small Van Ghent tuners on the headstock. The H-8 was popular briefly in the late 60's, notable in retrospect for appearing on several Jimi Hendrix cuts played by both Noel Redding and Hendrix himself. The admittedly specialist instrument saw some success slipped out of production by the '70's and is fairly rare today. The sound is unique and in some ways underappreciated-in the late 70's Cheap Trick took the idea to further extremes with Tom Petersson's 12-string basses. The Hagstrom H-8 remains one of those under-utilized sonic gems, still waiting to be fully exploited and appreciated!

Overall length is 43 in. (109.2 cm.), 14 1/8 in. Plays and sounds excellent (what a sound!) but has some general wear and tear. There are some large dings and scratches to the finish in several different areas-overall not too bad but a bit odd as the finish patina is still bright and shiny with not a lot of use evident. There is a long repaired grain split on the back of the neck from the 3rd fret up to the headstock; this is common on older Hagstroms with this very thin neck and large proportion of metal in the "expander" truss rod system. This is very solid and cleanly sealed with no added finish, and only evident on close examination. The fingerboard binding has been replaced with grained ivoroid, also a clean job. Although definitely built to a price this is still a well-designed and quite useful lightweight bass. Very handy to play, with two good sounding chrome Vox pickups set up with individual volume controls and a master tone. The very bright red poly body finish was calculated to appeal to the teenage English rocker in the age of the Shadows, and still looks great today. A very playable piece of Vox history, and a cool little bass.

Overall length is 40 3/4 in. (103.5 cm.). Very nice overall; some typical heavy finish checking on the body. The oft-missing headstock decals are still complete. The tuners are modern versions of the Van Gent originals; all else is original-the press-on bridge cover is missing. There is an added ground wire externally between the pickguard and bridge (Vox did not originally ground these!). A neat little player and a very good example of Vox's 1960's English made beginner-level bass guitar, complete with the original rectangular pasteboard case. The flat-topped body features a single excellent sounding DeArmond pickup with tone, volume and a large lever (the "KLUNK" switch) that bypasses the tone control. The neck is thick but comfortable, with a standard 30" scale. The strangest feature is the large white plastic off-center "batwing" pickguard, which certainly gives the bass an distinctive look! The H-22 was used extensively by both Muff Winwood in the Spencer Davis Group and Ronnie Lane of the Small Faces in the mid-'60's, and its agressive tone can be clearly heard in their recordings.

Overall length is 44 1/2 in. This one carries pots and a body stamp dating to 1965,the peak year of the 1960's guitar boom. With a long 22 fret neck and single "lipstick" pickup the Model 1444 is an extremely useful and good sounding bass, light, handy and easy to play. This bass has been VERY heavily played, and for good reason! A veteran of thousands of gigs, this bass is just in from the second owner, who made a living with it for over 40 years. There is heavy finish wear everywhere, with some thumb wear into the body wood in two places above the pickguard. All finish, electronics and hardware remain original; there are no repairs and the only alteration is one added screw hole in the face of the headstock between the E and A tuners. The neck is in very good playing condition, with less finish wear than one might expect- the frets have some wear but are still fully functional.

This is simply an exceptional sounding Fender bass, typically warm but clear sound and an effortless player. This bass was played by one owner for the better part of a lifetime and is now ready for the next!
