It has some non-standard features (mostly the cabinet construction) and is likely either a one-off custom variation or more likely a factory test amp. It was originally sold or given to working New York player Steve Knight (most known for his time in Mountain) sometime in 1968 or early '69, and he kept it for the rest of his life. As a working musician well known in NYC (both in the Feenjohn Group, with whom he recorded in 1966 and The Devil's Anvil, an offshoot band signed to Columbia in 1967) Steve may have had a relationship with Ampeg even before Mountain was formed and gotten this as some sort of field test amp, or non-standard factory sample

Steve Knight is mostly remembered today as the keyboard player for Mountain from 1969 through 1972, but before and after his stint in that seminal New York band was equally active locally as a bassist and guitarist. Knight already knew Mountain frontman/bassist/producer Felix Pappalardi by 1966 while in The Devil's Anvil, which combined rock and middle-eastern music. Pappalardi produced and played on their Columbia LP in 1967, with Knight playing bass and guitar. The two apparently enjoyed working together, as when Pappalardi put Mountain together around Leslie West he tapped Knight to fill out the band's sound on keys.

Knight was occasionally pictured playing bass at Mountain rehearsals; although their stage rig consisted of massive Sunn stacks (it was 1970) this amp may well have been used in their rehearsal loft in NYC. After Mountain's initial breakup in 1972, Knight primarily played in more jazz-oriented situations, where this B-15 made a perfect choice as a performance amp. According to his family this Ampeg was his primary gigging amplifier for the remainder of his career. Anecdotally he told them the B-15 was onstage when he performed with Mountain at Woodstock in August 1969, probably as his stage monitor. The film footage of the event shows a similar dark shape on the stage to his right, but that this cannot be confirmed as this amp so the story remains hearsay!

The amplifier itself consists of an apparently standard 1968 era B-15N head mounted on an unusual variation of the Portaflex cabinet. It has a larger top plate (the piece the amplifier section is mounted to) than the standard models, which extends over the front edge of the speaker enclosure. This is not something we have seen before on any production B-15, but the cabinet construction appears to be Ampeg factory work, including their proprietary screws and fittings. The metal cabinet corners are held on with Ampeg clutch screws, instead of pinned as standard. There is no trim around the front edge of the cabinet.

The amp has no serial number, either stamped into the rear of the chassis or on any internal label, The light-up Ampeg logo is not mounted to the front of the tube cage, and there is no raised logo on the top of the cabinet face. The visible pot dates are coded to the 8th week of 1968, so the amp was likely assembled sometime that year. Whatever original speaker was installed was upgraded long ago to an Altec-Lansing 421A by Steve Knight; There is a small piece of paper stapled to the top plate behind the amp unit with the speaker details recorded.

Whatever its pedigree this is an excellent sounding amplifier, the combination of the B-15 head and the high-grade speaker offering excellent low end with more headroom than a standard B-15 can usually provide. Exactly how it was procured by Steve Knight is lost to history, but it does seem to be some sort of production sample, given both its unusual cabinet configuration and lack of a serial number. And it has certainly been some interesting places and had an adventurous existence, quite possible including the most famous gig of the 20th Century!

Height is 38 in. (96.5 cm.), 21 1/2 in. (54.6 cm.) width, and 14 in. (35.6 cm.) deep.

This amp shows wear consistent with heavy gigging use but has also been well cared for. The fairly thin covering on the cabinet has a number of smaller tears overall, mostly along the edges as one would expect. Only a few spots of the covering are actually missing. Generally it is decently preserved for a well-used amp. As this is a somewhat non-standard Ampeg, in some cases it is hard to say exactly what the configuration originally was; the head has been re-mounted to the cabinet and the handle appears of somewhat later vintage. There are paper indicator sheets stapled to the top front of the cabinet helpfully showing the road crew how to plug in on a dark stage!

Internally the amp has seen a decent amount of upkeep and maintenance, including a generous amount of silicone gel applied in a number of spots to keep components from rattling at higher volume. The bulk of the chicken head knobs fitted had cracked internally around the set screws, making them impossible to tighten enough to reliably turn the pot shafts. They have been replaced with an exact modern repro set, but the originals are included for historical accuracy!

The amp has been inspected and cleaned. Usually we thoroughly service all amplifiers electronically before sale but as this is a unique one-of-a-kind "artist" piece we have not made any internal alterations. We tested is and it still works well, but we cannot guarantee its performance after sale as many of the components are long past their expiration dates. We can service the amp post-purchase, if desired for reliability if it is to be used. As it stands the amplifier sounds excellent, it has been tweaked internally more than once through the decades, notably with the silicone added to keep rattling to a minimum. The upgraded speaker gives it more headroom and projection than a stock B-15. As a piece of Ampeg and general 20th century musical history this is a neat piece, somewhat obscure perhaps but fascinating nonetheless. The favorite of countless 1960's bass players including the dean of Motown bottom, James Jamerson.

Height is 29 1/2 in. (74.9 cm.), 21 in. (53.3 cm.) width, and 14 in. (35.6 cm.) deep. Overall moderately well worn but a good functional example. The tolex on the bottom of the amp is beginning to peel as is fairly typical. Replaced speaker as is so often the case with these; the "M" is gone from the front metal logo and the light-up plastic logo plate is missing. This amp has recently had its 100,000 mile checkup by well-respected tech Blackie Pagano, so it is in studio-ready shape ready to provide the classic Ampeg sound. This later version of the all-time classic smaller bass amp has the same basic circuit and construction as the 1960s models with a black Tolex covering replacing blue check on the outside and the addition of the SVT tone shaping switches for "Ultra High" and Ultra Low" mounted above a redesigned faceplate.

This amp has been well-cared for but shows some light wear overall, most notably some small spots of the screen print on the faceplate are worn off and there is one deep scratch into the aluminum over the power switch. There is some chipping to the finish on the top of the left hand transformer casing, and the Tolex on the bottom of the cart has some small rips. As is common with old B-15s, one of the two power transformers has been neatly replaced. The original 1940s "Ampeg Bassamp" followed by the larger Model 815 were really the first commercially successful purely bass amps, designed to accompany the "amplified Peg" for upright bass that Everett Hull's company was named for. Equipped with a 15" speaker, the 1951 Model 815 was the first unit to offer a truly deep enough low end to make amplified bass more than a novelty in the early 1950s.

It took Leo Fender less than a year to release a strikingly similar design, the original "Bassman" as the companion for their newly perfected solidbody Precision Bass. This copied the Ampeg Bassamp's old split-chassis format with the control panel on top and the remainder of the electronics at the bottom of the cabinet. In the meantime the Ampeg Bassamp continued to subtly evolve; the mid-50s were ripe with an abundance of variant models and one-offs emerging from Ampeg's modular approach to design, some of which were never featured in any catalogs.

According to available literature, this amp was indeed never advertised in any official product catalog. It appears to be closest to the Model 815 in features, but clad in the newer 1956 cosmetics and has an added sensitivity control to accommodate both magnetic and crystal pickup inputs. The control is smaller, unlabeled and installed in a "third" input-jack hole. This allowed the amp to better accommodate the growing number of new electric basses of the 1950s, which were proving much more popular then Ampeg's namesake Peg. Company founder Everett Hull didn't like them, but was smart enough to know they greatly would expand his potential market for bass amplifiers!

Like its predecessor, this amp has a main volume control and separate treble and bass controls. It originally sported two 6L6 power tubes in push-pull roughly yielding 15-20 watts into a 15" Jensen Alnico V speaker. It is functional at jazz club levels as intended, with a nice round low end. Fairly uncommon today, the early Ampeg bass amplifiers are historically important units, part of the inevitable ascendance of the electric bass although much overshadowed by Fender as the 1950s turned into the '60s.

Height is 20 1/2 in. The rather thin exterior black covering is showing its share of corner and edge-wear but remains nicely intact overall with no major tears or patches missing. The control panel is clean with only minor amounts of corrosive staining. The handle appears to have been replaced with a newer reproduction. The grille cloth is in fantastic shape with the stenciled graphic and Ampeg logo still strikingly visible.

Electrically, this little Ampeg is mostly original. The speaker appears to be a later Eminence square-magnet bearing the code 67-7940, dating it to the 40th week of 1979. All major components appear to be otherwise original. This particular example is just "post-blue-checkered-Tolex" era Ampeg from 1967 and was marketed as a companion amplifier to the upright Baby Bass. Ampeg legend holds that "SB" stood for "string bass" and was Jess Oliver's preferred design for upright bass once the B-15s became more deliberately marketed for electric bass. The earlier catalogs proclaim the B-12 models to be for "upright bass primarily" and the B-15 models to be for electric or "upright bass if a deeper tone is desired".

Featuring a simplified single channel design, the SB-12's front panel still sports the familiar dedicated instrument and bass inputs alongside master volume, treble and bass controls. Two 7868 power tubes in push-pull yield approx. 25 watts of power into a single 12" speaker. This particular iteration of the model also has the fairly clever idea of connecting the speaker through the cabinet latches, eliminating the need for a dedicated cable. There's some light corrosion to the chrome and some noticeable old rust around the fuse cap in particular but most of the decorative stenciling is still nicely intact. The chrome-plated control panel is equally in fabulous shape with practically all the fragile stenciled lettering intact and very minor overall wear. The chrome is still shiny and even the somewhat fragile Bakelite knobs look like new; really this amp looks more 5 years old than 55! The original dolly and casters (which are almost always missing) are in excellent shape as well with some typical scuffing to the corners. The amp even retains the original blue checked cover, which still remains in decent shape despite some well-earned wear protecting the amp underneath! One of the latches is a period replacement and the original handle still has plenty of life left in it.

Electrically, the amp is nearly all-original. While its legendary Tweed predecessor was the direct inspiration for Jim Marshalls revolutionary creations, this later mid-60s iteration established a later niche as a utilitarian tube workhorse with punk, rock and garage guitarists in particular, who favored the affordably available (and very crankable) amps on the used market when a 50 watt tube amp was no longer much desired by bassists. The black panel Bassman made its most notable modern guitar-centric sonic contributions on many of Kurt Cobain's tracks on Nirvana's "Nevermind".

By mid-1964 1964 Fender changed much of their amp line considerably. Following the short-lived black Tolex and silver grille cloth-clad white knob "tuxedo" amps, further updates on the Bassman included skirted black knobs with numbers and deleting the presence control. Specifically tailored for bass instruments, the Bassman remained a fairly bare-bones amplifier while the rest of the "professional" Fender line came standard with onboard reverb and tremolo.

The new AA864 Bassman circuit featured dedicated bass and normal channels, with the former re-voiced and with an added gain stage as well as a "Deep" switch. The "Normal" channel was given a "Bright" switch. A few other changed components, as well as a lower-gain phase inverter tube encourages a later onset of clipping when pushed. The dual-6L6GC push-pull power section yields approximately 50 watts of power into two 12" Jensen speakers, housed in a separate closed-back cabinet with matching cosmetics. This head-and-cabinet format has usually been jocularly referred to as "piggyback" style.

This amp sports the AB165 iteration of the circuit, albeit the tube chart indicating the short-lived AA165 (Fender kept using up older tube charts for a considerable number of units). The circuit features a handful of changes that when pushed, the amp offers more breakup, compression and sag on both channels compared to its predecessor. While a popular amp for Fender bassists when issued, the Bassman was left behind in the much louder stages from the late '60's on and since that time has been primarily used by guitarists. Both grille cloth coverings are impeccable as well; taut, clean and show no signs of tears or fraying. The front panel is very clean, showing only a few dings and scratches and all the knobs appear original and are nicely intact. The often-removed tilt back legs and cabinet securing bolts are also intact. The original handle and hardware show minor-to-moderate signs of corrosion overall. The amp also retains the original brown speaker cord which is in fantastic shape for its age.

Electrically, this complete nearly 60 year old piggyback rig remains nicely original. The power, choke and output transformers are original as well, marked 606-545, 606-547 and 606-604, dating them to the 45th and 47th week of 1965 and 4th week of 1966, respectively. Conceived by Jess Oliver in 1958, the iconic 'flip-top' design has been the preferred in-house bass amplifier for the great majority of professional studios, and was a lower-volume gig standard from its early days as a union-provided amp on the Manhattan club scene.

The 'flip-top' design was partly inspired by contemporary sewing machines, allowing the amp to effectively be stored inside of itself, making it highly practical for transport. Another innovation was the double-baffle cabinet design, which places the speaker between two baffles, one outer and one inner that was fixed to the cabinet to which the speaker would be mounted. The inner baffle featured a number of ports, effectively allowing the rear and the front waves of the speaker to meet perfectly in-phase.

The B-15 saw a number of revisions through the first half of the 60s. This particular amp is the "NF" version, where Ampeg decided to go back to a single baffle design that was further recessed from the front. The power section was redesigned for fixed bias, offering an increase in efficiency and headroom, now putting out ~30 watts of power over its 25 watt predecessors. The amp otherwise has the same features as earlier revisions; two channels, each with its own volume, treble and bass controls, guitar and bass inputs for channel one and an instrument input for channel two. The push-pull 6L6-driven power section puts out roughly 30 watts into a single 15" speaker.

From James Jamerson to John Paul Jones, to even Jimi Hendrix, who was known for plugging into a pair on occasion, these amps have arguably reproduced the low notes of some of the most influential musicians in modern times.

Height is 29 in. The chassis is nicely clean overall with only minor signs of corrosion and overall wear, with the stenciled graphics virtually all intact. The handle is a correct modern repro; this part is quite often replaced by now.

Internally, this amp remains nicely original. The serial number dates the chassis to 1966. From its inception until today, this model has been the preferred in-house bass amplifier for the great majority of professional studios, and was a lower volume gig standard as well. We see a decent number of period B-15s, but most have seen decades of use and often show heavier wear and/or modifications. This early 1967 model is easily one of the cleaner we have had, a very well cared for and still wonderful sounding amp.

Height is 29 in. (73.7 cm.), 21 in. The signature "Blue Check" Tolex is in fabulous shape, with minimal visible wear. There is some light scuffing to the tops of the transformers and tube cage from decades of the amp being flipped and stowed in the cabinet. The grille cloth shows some light staining but is otherwise taut and free of any notable tearing or fraying. The chassis and control panel is very clean with all the stenciled lettering nicely intact. The original Ampeg logo from the upper front of the cabinet is present, and the amp comes with the original dolly as well. The handle is a correct modern repro; this part is quite often replaced by now as the originals usually harden and eventually crumble with time.

Internally, this amp remains nicely original. The speaker is the original CTS-made 15" ceramic square magnet unit that came stock in many of these, marked 137-628 dating it to the 28th week of 1966. Two 7868 power tubes in push-pull yield approx. 25 watts of power into a single 12" speaker. This iteration of the model also had the fairly clever idea of connecting the speaker through the cabinet latches, eliminating the need for a dedicated cable. This particular example also has the chassis mounted directly to the lid, forfeiting the 'shockmount' tray commonly seen on Fliptops; this appears to be the way this amp left Ampeg, as the schematic and wires appear unaltered. While less powerful than the B-15 this is still a lovely lower-volume bass amp, quite suitable for recording purposes with a versatile sound and the deep round response Portaflex Ampegs are famous for.

Height is 27 3/4 in. There is some light corrosion to the chrome but most of the decorative stenciling is still nicely intact. While its legendary Tweed predecessor was the direct inspiration for Jim Marshall's revolutionary creations, this later mid-60s iteration has long established a later niche as a utilitarian tube workhorse with punk, rock and garage guitarists in particular, who favored the affordably available (and very crankable) amps on the used market when a 50 watt tube amp was no longer much desired by bassists.

Specifically tailored for bass instruments, the Bassman remained a fairly bare-bones amplifier while much of the rest of the "professional" Fender line came standard with onboard reverb and tremolo.

The dual-6L6GC push-pull power section yields approximately 50 watts of power, which typically would be paired with two 12" Jensen speakers, housed in a separate closed-back cabinet with matching cosmetics. This head-and-cabinet format has usually been jocularly referred to as "piggyback" style, though this example is just the head-portion.

In today's lower volume world it once again makes a lovely all-tube bass amp for low/medium-volume applications, while alternately offering a massive guitar sound when pushed!

Height is 8 in. The front panel is very clean, showing only a few dings and scratches and all the knobs appear original and are nicely intact. The original handle and hardware only shows minor signs of corrosion overall.

Electrically, the amp remains nearly all original, with one period substitution. Visible pot codes date to '66. The amp has received our typical maintenance and servicing, including replacement of all electrolytic capacitors, a grounded 3-prong power cord, cleaning of all sockets, pots and jacks and power tubes biased to spec.

This remains a stellar-looking and fabulous sounding example of a beloved workhorse amp; a piggyback Fender head from this era is truly rare to find in such pristine condition and can even once again serve as a functional bass amp, now that the tides have turned in favor of lower-wattage amplification! Conceived by Jess Oliver in 1958, the iconic 'flip-top' design has been for decades since the preferred in-house bass amplifier for the great majority of professional studios, and was a lower-volume gig standard from its early days as a union-provided amp on the Manhattan bass club scene.

The 'flip-top' design was partly inspired by contemporary sewing machines, allowing the amp to effectively be stored inside of itself, making it highly practical for transport. Another innovation was the double-baffle cabinet design, which places the speaker between two baffles, one outer and one inner that was fixed to the cabinet, and to which the speaker would be mounted to. The inner baffle featured a number of ports, effectively allowing the rear and the front waves of the speaker to meet perfectly in-phase.

The B-15 saw a number of revisions through the first half of the 60s.
