Gibson had not built any of these fancy top-line orchestra guitars during the war years, and likely faced a backlog of orders as production was re-started in 1946-7. Guitars from this era feature a mix of older and newer characteristics as Gibson used up the last leftover prewar parts and began re-tooling their instruments. Additionally, this guitar has an unusually "tight' to the body edge sunburst with a large golden center area, which we have seen on a few other Epis (the 1937-9 on the current Epiphone Company's "wiki' page is identical).

Most unusual, the top is multi-bound with 8 plys and the back triple bound, which is fancier than than any Triumph we have seen! The functional result of all these features is a wonderful sounding guitar with a big, open and surprizingly rich tone that plays effortlessly and can easily fill a room. The 1936 catalog listing for the Triumph specifically mentins a "new narrower neck" and this guitar definitely has a slim-contoured neck with a slight "V" profile that is much less chunky than many Epiphones, making it more comfortable for many players. The (originally) $125.00 Triumph was the lowest "professional" grade model in the Epiphone line, like the Gibson L-7, but this one has a sound equal to many much more expensive guitars, from this or any other era.

Overall length is 42 in. Built on the same body and neck style as the highly sought-after Chet Atkins model 6120 these 6117's are often under-appreciated guitars, with the same "Great Gretsch Sound". This early example has two "PAF" filtertron pickups, an neo-classic fingerboard with no zero fret the "trestle braced" body construction with the top bracing arching down to meet the back. This is an especially desirable feature as it results in a stronger, tighter sounding guitar with much more resistance to feedback but was only used during this 1958-61 period. This guitar is super clean overall; the finish is very well preserved with very little of play wear and a bright unfaded sunburst. There is little chipping under the bridge, otherwise the lacquer is hardly worn or checked at all. The only major issue is some typical shrinkage and first-stage cracking to the back binding (NOT on the top edge) and fillet in the cutaway; it is not crumbling and at this point does not affect play at all. There is a little pitting to the fingerboard but the frets are still quite good. A very good player, the neck angle is fine and the Filter'Tron pickups sound excellent. In late 1934 Gibson upgraded their entire archtop guitar line; While the L-5 was supplanted at the very top by the new 18" Super 400 it was still the company's signature instrument. The newer 17" wide L-5 was bigger, fancier and smoother-sounding than the original 16" version and became the keynote guitar for swing-era big band players, as well as soloists like Dick McDonough and Carl Kress. This is a rather hard-to-find guitar, for such a well-known instrument.

Surviving data indicates that surprisingly few L-5's were produced in 1936...only 19 17" L-5's are listed as having shipped that year, but with a substantial upkick in 1937. While the records may well be incomplete, this does suggest that these guitars are far rarer than generally thought. This L-5 has a serial number dating to mid-late 1936 by most reckoning, and the guitar has some transitional features making for an unusual combination. The top is parallel braced...in general early advanced guitars in this period are "X" braced, with the occasional rare exception like this one. The "F" holes are the larger pattern introduced around this time, but unbound like the earlier smaller style. Tuners are the early style open-back gold plated Grovers, and the tailpiece is the earlier open pattern, hinged at the base.

Typical L-5 appointments abound including multiple binding everywhere, pearl flowerpot inlay and prewar script Gibson logo, wide bell truss rod cover and pearl block position marks. This L-5 has seen some serious play and a fairly major top repair, but remains a very fine player. The neck is slimmer than many, with just the slightest hint of a "V" profile at the lower frets. Almost any style of play brings forth a big powerful sound.

Overall length is 42 in. (106.7 cm.), 17 in. (43.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 7/16 in. (8.7 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 7/16 in. (646 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). Overall a very nice guitar, with a very warm and well-rounded sound. A solid but unfortunately ugly top repair-two long cracks on the treble side near the bridge, sealed and touched up some time ago-makes this more of a players than collectors' guitar. There is some patched-up superficial damage to the top under the bridge, the longer top crack extends from the bottom edge into the upper bout while the second, slightly higher on the top is not as long. They are cleanly glued and cleated from underneath, but the old touch-up work is quite visible and they rather conspicuous. Other than this the guitar has normal play wear, with a lot of finish worn off the back of the neck, but no other major repairs-the pickguard is missing but all other hardware is original. A good bargain in a player's pre-WWII high-grade carved top guitar. Built on the same body neck style as the highly sought-after Chet Atkins model 6120 these 6117's are often under-appreciated guitars, with the same "Great Gretsch Sound". This early example also has the "trestle braced" body construction with the top bracing arching down to meet the back, an especially desirable feature (it results in a stronger, tighter sounding guitar with much more resistance to feedback) only used on Gretsch guitars during this 1958-61 period. The neck on this guitar is an unusual 5-piece laminate seen only around this time, also sometimes encountered on 6120's. This is one of the best sounding and playing Gretsch's we have had, a real honey with a singing sound.

Overall length is 42 in. (106.7 cm.), 15 1/2 in. Beautiful, all original condition...some very minor wear and checking but really, they don't come a a lot better than this. No repairs, set upnicely- a very good player. Includes a nice original HSC. This very early PAF Filter'tron pickups with unsculpted surround rings and the faitly short-lived 'trestle' bracing design where the top braces arch down under the bridge to meet the back.
This happy combination results in a spectacular sounding and great-playing guitar, one of the coolest 'Clubs we have seen from any period. The guitar also features original Grover Imperial tuners, early "G-arrow" knobs and the first version of the then-new "Space Control" bridge with the higher conical end caps. All edges are multibound, all metal hardware is gold plated and the ebony fingerboard has the half-moon "Neo-Classic" inlays. This is simply a super classy and unique Gretsch, and a great guitar for Rockabilly, early Rock&Roll stylings, Vinatge Country or even Jazz (Ask Al Caiola!).

Overall length is 42 in. Very fine overall-some checking to the top, and light chipping to the finish overall but no major wear or damage. The headstock "wings" show some slight typical seperation but are solid. Great neck angle, all original except a correct style but slightly later tailpiece. An exceptionally nice playing and sounding Gretsch, from one of the company's greatest years.
