The medium-sized mahogany body and spruce top combine to produce a warm yet bright sound with a lot of power and plenty of 'ring'. The big wide mahogany neck with a center maple strip lamination and unbound rosewood fingerboard is quite comfortable. The top is frefinished (a nice thin lacquer, but not profesionally buffed out) and the remainder of the guitar has a thin overspray. The bridge is original but is somewhat cut down and has four filled screw holes in the wings; the bridgeplate is newer. The top center seam has a splice, there are several old grain splits in front of the bridge but the rest of the guitar is crack-free. The pickguard appears to be a more recent replacement, in the correct shape and style. This guitar was made soon after 1935, when the Oscar Schmidt company had recently been reorganized following its namesake's death. The guitar is branded internally on a paper label with the traditional script "STELLA" logo; beneath that is "Fretted Instrument M'F'rs Inc., Formerly Oscar Schmidt, Inc. manufactured since 1879 Jersey City USA". The label also notes "Exclusively for New York"; unfortunately the wholesaler's name is missing. This instrument was made at the same time at the same factory as the legendary "Leadbelly" 12-string (also labeled by FIM) but is not as high-grade a guitar. The "binding", soundhole ring and top decoration are all decals but the Stella logo is impressed in the headstock in the Schmidt style. The tailpiece is the original old Stella style with posts to guide the strings, as seen on the 1910's and '20's 12-string guitars. This guitar has a cool midrangey sound, and while far from top-of-the-line is certainly an authentic instrument for pre-war blues styles-in fact it looks to have seen quite a history already!

Overall length is 38 1/2 in. This 12-srting has seen an epic amount of playing time-it is a WELL worn guitar, but recently rebuilt to an excellent standard of playability, and with a mojo second to none. Everything is original except the bridge saddle, including the tuners, tailpiece and dyed-wood bridge. A number of seams have been resealed, and there are several repaired back cracks and one top crack that is sealed but still quite visible on the lower bass bout. Overall there is fairly heavy finish wear just about everywhere, including wear through the painted-on "binding" and the decal decorations to the top. The dyed-wood fingerboard shows wear all the way up to the 12th fret-whoever owned this guitar was not just a "cowboy chord" player but a serious fretboard manipulator. The guitar is completely solid and speaks for itself-in a somewhat compressed but authoratative pre-war ladder braced tone-as an ultimate "Blues Approved" 12 string. The only alteration is the original "Top Tensioner" unit that was mounted under the bridge has been removed-this screw-adjusted plate was designed to press the top upwards in front of the bridge, but in practice acts as a giant damper removing nearly all tone from the guitar! This was used by Gibson in the mid-60's as a dealer-adjustable safeguard for troublesome models (like J-200's and 12-strings) but nearly all have been removed by now, as they add nothing to the guitar except a lot of weight! This 12-string shows some slight top arching behind the bridge, actually less than we often see on this model. The bridge has never been off and the guitar is fully stable. The back and sides are highly figured "Danish Oak" with a spruce top, trimmed in colored wood marquetry. The poplar neck has a dot-inlaid rosewood fingerboard. There is an orange label in the soundhole with the Lakeside logo above a sailboat, with the phrase "Guaranteed Musically Correct" and a sort of runic "L&H" Lyon & Healy logo. This model is listed in the 1919 Lyon & Healy catalog as a "Concert' size guitar; with a 13 1/2" lower bout it's actually closer the a traditional Grand Concert. The neck has been reset and the bridge is a modern pyramid-end repro which appears to have replaced a slightly oversize piece-there is some visible touch up in front. The original varnish finish shows fine checking overall but not any extensive play wear-only small dings, scuffs and chips. This example of a late-1960's Hoboken-era Guild 12 string shows some repair work but not much evidence of use and is an excellent player, with the expected big sound even for this smaller-body model. It is just back from its first neck set and plays very well; the bridge was never taken down and now shows plenty of saddle. The guitar remains all original except for an added strap pin on the heel and a later truss rod cover. There is a repaired back crack on the treble side of the center seam, and two center back braces has small repairs just above it. The back of the neck shows a repaired seam running under the bass side truss rod; this is not uncommon on these 12-strings as the twin truss rod troughs under the fingerboard were cut quite deep, very close to the back of the neck. This is fully sealed and not a functional issue but still visible with some light touch-up added. There is very little play wear, just some very light scuffs and a sticker mark on the back of the headstock. In production since 1940, the H-922 was the only 12-string guitar available through the 1950's, and one of the few "Stella" products that still carried a stylistic link to the brand's pre-war origins. This 1962 example has a HUGE V-profile neck, traditional tailpiece and bridge setup and less than deluxe painted on binding and trim on the all-birch, ladder braced body. The guitar has a big powerful sound, and when it was built was still the only choice for a big-body 12-string-Gibson. Right at this point Gibson, Martin and Guild were all just about to bring 12-string flattop instruments to market but in 1962 the venerable 922 was still the only game in town, and still a very unique instrument.

Overall length is 39 1/2 in. The work was done by Michael Hauver, a Maryland luthier who specializes in creating Stella-style instruments. A new 12-string neck and bridge were made in the correct period style for an original 1920's Oscar Schmidt body. As all-original Schmidt 12-strings are extremely rare this is a fairly economical way of answering the demand for them in an authentic if not completely original form.

This relatively fancy guitar was originally built by the Oscar Schmidt factory in Jersey City to be sold by C. Bruno in New York, one of their biggest customers and a major jobber at the time. The original blue paper soundhole label reads "C. Bruno & Son, New York, Established 1834, Incorporated 1908 Musical Instruments at Wholesale" and dates to the 1920's or earlier. This guitar was probably a 6-string instrument when new, although Bruno did sell Schmidt-made 12 strings. The top is spruce, bordered on the edge and around the soundhole with a double row of the colored wood marquetry typical of Schmidt with celluloid outer binding. The back and sides are mahogany, with a bound edge and a wide herringbone center strip. The bracing internally is mostly original, with the original wide, thin bridge plate and a couple of added braces to better support the 12-string format.

The newer neck is made in the original Stella Style, but with a rounder backed profile than most original period Schmidt necks. The headstock is in the original slotted style with repro strip tuners of the type that would have been fitted at the time. The logo is a nice reproduction of the 1920's "Stella" die stamp with inset paint like the original. The fingerboard is ebony (a step up from the dyed white woods usually seen on the originals) and inlaid with the typical fancy "New York" shaped pearl pattern seen on many such guitars. The bridge is also ebony, carved in the typical Stella style with 12 pins (many original Schmidts use only 6).

This guitar plays and sounds excellent; the rounder neck and ebony fingerboard definitely make it more user-friendly than most authentic 1920's Stella 12-strings. This smaller body guitar is not quite as deep sounding as the larger Stella 12 strings but still has a rich, powerful tone, and sounds great tuned to D or C#. Perfect for Barbecue Bob or Blind Willie stylings, and it will cover those Leadbelly tunes in a pinch. A very economical way to get the "true Blues" 12 string sound in a very gig-able instrument.

Overall length is 41 1/2 in. (105.4 cm.), 14 5/8 in. (37.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 3/4 in. (9.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 26 1/2 in. (673 mm.). Width of nut is 1 15/16 in. (49 mm.). There is some considerable wear and secondary finish work to the "old" parts of this guitar, but it is solidly rebuilt and retains a nicely relic'ed vintage patina. The newer neck and bridge show virtually no wear, but are well matched to the original components.

The mahogany back has several old grain cracks sealed up, with a somewhat sloppier overfinish than the rest of the instrument. A long section of the bass side adjacent to the back appears to have been replaced with a slightly differently grained mahogany. This section is about 1/2" wide and runs from heelblock to tailblock. We can only assume the original instrument suffered some heavy damage in this area. There is one minor grain crack to the treble side as well.

The top has a long spruce grain split off the treble side of the bridge, otherwise it appears crack free and very solid. The top has an ambered overfinish with the original finish showing wear underneath. Everything on this guitar is very solid, as it was fitted with the replica neck the body was properly rebuilt to suit. While not a fully original instrument this is a very fine and authentic sounding Stella 12-string at a fraction of the price of an all-original example.
Excellent - Condition.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0672/8702/3756/files/01_8bcfdfe1-ef8b-4a80-808b-245cb4517808.jpg?v=1774334555
c-f-martin-d-12-20-12-string-flat-top-acoustic-guitar-1971-8640
C. There are some repaired grain cracks to the top; two behind the bridge running to the back edge, one running from the front edge of the bridge to the sound hole rim, and several small splits on the top edge of the pickguard and sound hole rim under the fingerboard. All are neatly sealed up with no added finish.

There are two somewhat inexplicable dinks through the finish on the upper treble bout, but virtually no pickwear or other deep marks. The pickguard is replaced (the original is still in the case pocket, curled up like a Pringle), but everything else on the guitar is original. With a recent neck set and refret this is an excellent-playing guitar, still in the original 1971 yellow-lined chipboard case. Overall Excellent - Condition.
C. F.
