Slingerland May-Bell Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (early '30's), made in Chicago, natural lacquer with decal applique finish, birch back and sides, spruce top; hardwood neck with ebonized fingerboard, black hard shell case.
Overall length is 37 in. (94 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 7/8 in. (9.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7/8 in. (48 mm.). This is a very nice example of an early '30's Slingerland flat top, not an expensive guitar but well made and quite attractive in its own way. It has been fitted with a larger modern bridge, an new end pin and a strap button on the side of the heel but remains otherwise original. The top finish is quite clean with some light strumwear and the colorful gilt-and-cherub stencil decoration is nicely intact. The back shows more wear into but not through the finish and has one long repaired grain crack near the center seam. Set up well with a good period-correct sound, this depression gem is very authentic for vintage blues or hillbilly stylings and a fun guitar all around. Excellent Condition.
