Danelectro Standard Shorthorn Model 3612 Model Electric 6-String Bass Guitar (1959), made in Neptune, NJ, serial # 1219, bronze lacquer finish, masonite and pine body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, handmade hard shell case.

This is a good-playing and all original example of a fairly uncommon Danelectro. While the original Shorthorn guitar and 4-string bass are fairly common as old Dan-o's go, this 6-string bass was made in far smaller numbers than either and is a much more difficult find. This copper-top beauty is a very early example of this model and has all the "classic" 1959 Dan-o features: semi-hollow Masonite and pine body with rear "trap hatch" control access, white pebble vinyl side covering, clear celluloid pickguard with vinyl beneath. The single lipstick tube pickup is controlled with a volume and tone knob, the latter mated to a 3-way tone modifier switch that selects either a bass or treble roll-off. The short 15-fret neck has a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and is topped with the trademark "coke bottle" headstock with vertical silver Danelectro logo. This is a great sounding 6-string bass/Baritone guitar with the classic Danno twang factor, even with a single pickup.

Overall length is 38 1/2 in. (97.8 cm.), 13 1/4 in. (33.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 29 1/2 in. (749 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). This lovely little bass remains all original and unaltered; there is some light wear overall, most notably to the back of the neck. In this early period Danelectro sprayed a color strip down the neck's spine OVER the lacquer sealer; in most cases (as here) it has worn away somewhat. There is some wear to headstock edges and the vinyl covering on the sides has a few stains and rubs in spots. The neck is very straight and this is a nicely playable example. Includes a rather whimsical and eye-catching trapezoidal hand-made case covered in green/blue vinyl. Excellent - Condition.
