Regal Recording King Jumbo Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar, c. 1940, made in Chicago, sunburst lacquer finish, mahogany back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, hard shell case.
This is a very rare guitar, a pre-WWII Jumbo X-braced flat top built for Montgomery Ward by Regal in Chicago. While Regal is mostly remembered as a lower-end manufacturer, they were quite capable of making quality instruments when paid to do so! In this case, the guitar is quite well made, with solid mahogany back, sides and neck and a solid spruce top. Top binding is 4-ply, the rosewood fingerboard is single bound with large pearl dots and the soundhole features a bound edge and inlaid wood rosette.
Original hardware includes covered Kluson tuners and strap brackets on the headstock and body end for a cord strap. The neck is a chunky soft "V" contour and the sound is big and full, much superior to most catalog instruments of the era. With a list price of between $50-60.00 when new, this was a professional grade guitar at the time priced to compete with Martin and Gibson. A real bargain in a guitar of this type and age, and a very sharp looking instrument to boot!
Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 5 in. (12.7 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/4 in. (641 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.). Very fine overall; does not appear to have been played extensively. There is some minor play wear to neck with the finish worn through but the rest of the guitar is quite clean with no visible damage or repair. The bridge appears to be a very well made replacement, all else is original. Plays very well, a very fine example. Excellent + Condition.
