Paulino Bernabe Classical Guitar (1982), made in Madrid
Madrid, French polish finish, rosewood back and sides, spruce top, laminated Spanish cedar neck with ebony fingerboard, black hard shell case.
Paulino Bernabe is a well-regarded Spanish luthier whose concert instruments are highly prized among knowledgeable players. The young Bernabe became an apprentice in the Ramirez shop in 1954, rising to manager before striking out on his own in 1970. His instruments are very much in the Spanish tradition but bear his personal design refinements, which he could not employ at the Ramirez shop.
In 1974 he constructed a 10-string guitar for Narcisco Yepes that has become one of the most recognizable classical instruments of the 20th century, used by the artist for much of his subsequent career. Bernabe is an expert player as well as a world-class luthier, and his instruments are considered extremely player-friendly and sweet sounding.
This fine Bernabe bears the maker's rather austere label, noting the shop address of Cuchilleros, 8 Madrid-12 and hand dated to 1982. Both the label and the slipper heel bear the maker's personal "PB" stamp as well. The neck features laminated construction with contrasting center strips unusual in a Spanish guitar, and the top features Bernabe's distinctive fan strutting. The sound is very powerful and well balanced, with a throaty resonance all its own.
This is a lovely example of the maker's work and a nicely aged 25-year-old concert guitar.
Overall length is 39 3/8 in. (100 cm.), 14 1/2 in. (36.8 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/8 in. (10.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 26 in. (660 mm.). Width of nut is 2 1/8 in. (54 mm.).
Very nice overall condition; some minor nail marks to the top and other light play wear. One gouge below the high E string at the bridge is the only major flaw, no other damage or repairs. Excellent Condition.
