Gibson ES-125 Arch Top Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1949)
Gibson ES-125 Model Arch Top Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1949), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # FON- 364, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case. Item # 7836
This is an early example of Gibson's post-WWII ES-125, the "bread and butter" electric during the company's period of rebuilding after years of mostly war-oriented work. This guitar has features specific to this era; the 16" body is laminated mahogany (later examples are maple) with a flat back and the pickup (the first P-90) has non-adjustable slug poles. The tailpiece is an off-the-rack part not specific to Gibson, but probably all that was available at the time. The knobs are the earliest gold-backed clear style with no numbers and the post-war "Gibson" logo decal is the earliest "joined dot" version.
Although designed as a student model these ES-125 guitars were fully a professional quality instrument and are often seen in many styles of playing in period photographs. This one is a nice example of the model, a bit worn in but still a very good playing and sounding guitar with an excellent neck angle and a punchier tone than later '50's examples.
Overall length is 40 1/2 in. (102.9 cm.), 16 in. (40.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 1/4 in. (8.3 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). This guitar shows wear and checking overall but no large areas of finish loss. Some finish is worn off down to the wood the back of the neck, and on the back of the guitar in the upper waist area. There is a long repaired side crack on the upper treble bout, well sealed, and oddly enough none at the common spot around the jack. The frets are original with some moderate wear and the lower part of the fingerboard shows some light divoting. The tuners are later 1950's Klusons and the pickguard is missing, the guitar is otherwise original. A good gigging example, includes a 1960's era Gibson HSC. Excellent - Condition.
