Kumalae Style 1 Model Soprano Ukulele, c. 1919, made in Hawaii, natural finish, koa wood body and neck.

This is a fairly well-worn but quite early Kumalae ukulele, in good playing condition. The Style 1 was the lowest graded Kumalae, having no ornamentation except a contrasting wood soundhole ring triple line inlay. This is a fairly early example with the extremely narrow waist, bearing a nice "Gold Award P.P.I.E. 1915" headstock decal and white paper Kumalae label A very fine sounding Hawaiian uke from the era of the first ukulele craze!
Overall length is 20 1/2 in. (52.1 cm.), 6 in. (15.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 3/8 in. (6 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 12 7/8 in. (327 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/8 in. (35 mm.). This uke has been well used and had some sloppily executed repairs but is still a lovely instrument. There are sealed top and back cracks, and the bridge has been off and on more than once, with some of the finish in the area just around it sanded away. There is a chip to the upper treble bout edge and some dings and scrapes overall, but not much play wear-none to the top, and just some light finish loss to the fingerboard. Strung with NylGut strings this is still a good sounding uke, all original (including a nice complete set of original wooden pegs) and priced well below a clean example. Very Good + Condition.
