National Duolian Squareneck Resophonic Guitar (1935)
National Duolian Squareneck Model Resophonic Guitar (1935), made in Los Angeles, serial # C 9171, grey/green crinkle enamel finish, steel body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard. Item # 7393
This is a fairly rare squareneck Hawaiian variation of the National Duolian from the middle years of the Great Depression. This guitar body has a crystalline silver/green body finish and the second type "rolled edge" F-holes. The natural-finish 14-fret mahogany neck has a square profile and rosewood fingerboard, with a slotted headstock. The "National Duolian" logo appears on a shield decal on the face of the headstock with the serial number on the top edge.
These Duolians were the least expensive resonator National guitar offered at $32.50 with a thin-gauge steel body and minimal appointments they may well have enabled the company to survive the hard times of the early 1930's. Hawaiian style Duolians are fairly rare; by this point many steel players-both professional and student- were already switching to electric guitars. This is a great sounding guitar, a cool unusual slide monster with a uniquely powerful sound.
Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 14 1/4 in. (36.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 1/8 in. (7.9 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.). A nice example with some typical playwear but a great sound. The body finish is worn down to the metal in several places but still has a great look The coverplate shows a large wear patch through the enamel finish-incidentally revealing it to be made of brass, not steel and thus originally manufactured for use on a Style 0 guitar. At the time this sort of inconsistency was far from uncommon at National! The cone, biscuit and saddle are original, the nut and tuners are recent. The square neck shows wear to the back and edges from years of use as a standard guitar-someone was definitely going with what they had! This is a great sounding instrument, as good sounding a Hawaiian single cone as we have had. Overall Very Good + Condition.
