Gibson ES-175 Arch Top Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1949)

Gibson ES-175 Arch Top Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1949)

Gibson ES-175 Model Arch Top Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1949), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # A-4319, sunburst lacquer finish, laminated maple body, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.

This is a truly excellent example of an early ES-175, from the first year of issue for this enduringly popular Gibson. This is an especially attractive guitar, with a perfect gold-brown sunburst top and several minor but era-specific features different from later models. The P-90 pickup has a slightly narrower coil than mid-50's examples, the knobs are Gibson's early clear gold style with no markings and the bridge is a full-footed design used up through around 1954. When this guitar was shipped in December 1949, the ES-175 was still a new and unproven design. The combination of the 16" wide laminated maple body with a sharp Florentine cutaway, 24 3/4" scale and P-90 pickup resulted in a fortuitous and instantly popular design that remains one of Gibson's most well-regarded classics.

Overall length is 40 1/2 in. (102.9 cm.), 16 in. (40.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 1/4 in. (8.2 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.). This is a very clean and a extremely well preserved example. The pickguard is a nicely done exact repro using the original bracket, which shows some corrosion from the likely celluloid outgassing of the old one. The low E string tuner has been replaced with a modern re-issue, the rest of the set of early-style tulip-button Kluson deluxe pegs are original. Everything else on the guitar remains original except for an added strap button to the heel. The finish is in very fine condition with some checking and very light wear, most notably some chipping on the headstock face. The original frets have been taken down just a bit and this is a great playing and sounding early example of Gibson's "workingman's" jazz guitar. Excellent Condition.
