National New Yorker 7 String Model Lap Steel Electric Guitar (1938), made in Chicago, serial # C1984, two tone finish, maple body, plastic facing, original tweed hard shell case.

Here's something we rarely see -- a seven-string version of the supremely stylish National New Yorker lap steel. This early National steel is not only striking to look at but great-sounding as well.

The stairstepped wooden body and headstock are capped with an alternating black and white plastic overlay, while the black phenolic fingerboard has white engraved fret lines and positions marked in incised Roman numerals. The headstock marking is also cut-in to the plastic, with a National shield logo at the top. The early Kluson tuners have metal buttons and the gears are covered with oblong stamped metal plates.

The volume control is on the treble side just forward of the metal-covered pickup. A white chicken-head knob mounts behind the bridge and offers three preset tones with the sonic descriptions: "Hawaiian", "Chimes", and "Harp".

We have seen numerous six-string New Yorkers, both pre and post-war; it was one of National's more popular instruments at the time. This seven-string is exponentially rarer, and would have been made in very small numbers at best.

Beyond making a fantastic late-Deco visual statement, this National steel is a fine player's instrument with the added tuning versatility of the extra string.
Overall length is 33 1/8 in. (84.1 cm.), 7 in. (17.8 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 23 in. (584 mm.). Width of nut is 2 1/4 in. (57 mm.).

Exceptionally fine condition overall, with only light signs of wear. Still housed in its original tweed case which has some edge fraying and some water damage at the bottom edge. It also comes complete with a period-correct cable and an Amphenol/phone plug adaptor for the convenience of using any cord. Excellent + Condition.
