C. F. Martin 00-17 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1940), made in Nazareth, PA, natural mahogany finish, mahogany body and neck with rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case.

This lovely all-mahogany Martin 00-17 dates to late 1940, and is a stellar example with the crisply defined yet still warm sound these guitars are well-known for. The 00-17 was the larger of two styles offered in the all-mahogany format, and even though the overriding idea was economy, they were built to the same extremely high standard as all Martin instruments. There is no decoration and no frills -- just a plain and simple tone machine.

Typical Martin features for this late pre-war period include original individual Kluson openback tuners with plastic buttons, a small straight rosewood bridge, and a tortoise celluloid pickguard. These mahogany-top guitars have a distinctive ringing "dry" tone and are excellent fingerpickers as well as a great all-around choice in a vintage Martin that won't break the bank. The 00-17s still maintain the original scalloped bracing up into 1944 and that gives these pre-war examples an extra sweetness in the mids, sometimes less evident in the postwar models.

Overall length is 39 1/4 in. (99.7 cm.), 14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/16 in. (10.3 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This is an amazingly clean and superbly original guitar for this period, showing very little wear. There is some light checking to the finish and small dings and dents but really very little play wear for a guitar this old. The frets have just a slight bit of wear in the lower positions, and the bridge has been reglued and taken down just slightly. Playability is excellent and this guitar virtually exudes tonal delight, with the expected crisp highs and a liberal dose of full-range response beneath. A truly stellar example. Excellent Condition.
